How do you communicate effectively with other developers and stakeholders?

communication is a soft skill on top of everything, indeed knowing your audience helps, but unless you are truly able to be on the steps on who you are talking with is really hard to account for everything, so always approach people with respect, on the same ground, with humanity and humility, let everyone speak out ad listen carefully, the key on good communication for me is always been able to listen and understand different perspectives not as a challenge to your way of thinking but as a constructive way to approach a situation in different ways.

Communication is key. In case of stakeholders, it is more of business value they are looking for and in case of developers of technical stuff they are stuck. For the stakeholders, put all things in pure transparent way. In case there are bottlenecks raise red flags. I feel in most cases, not raising the voice earlier lead to total failures. In most cases, customers also understand, and finally win win situation should be created. For developers, be clear with design and customer requirements and in case problem is not solvable, put the same perspective in front of customer to come with solvable problem, again to create win win situation. In nutshell, be open for brainstorming sessions with all parties and create win win mode

In the age post COVID, and the virtual meetings, feeling a real connection with people sometimes is diminished by the online aspect of it, although face to face and peer to peer is the ideal scenario, in some situations is just impossible, as a person that has worked for more than 7 years now fully remotely, with people on different time-zones, countries and cultures, the key aspect is to always understand that when you are 100% online some factors of the face to face interaction can be avoided or misunderstood, so patience is key and be considered about who you are talking with, take some time to understand what are the cultural aspects that directly impact how they communicate, take some time to know your peers besides work.

During the recent times , when tell communication using Microsoft teams have become very common in organisations, I have felt that people are ignoring the use of email and proper channel and trying to communicate on teams most of the time. While it might be best use case for quick question , idea or discussion but it might not be relevant for a detailed , actionable discussions .

It's imperative to decide the communication plan right at the beginning of a project. Which can be improvised as and when needed but whatever is decided should be followed without fail. Every communication should be traceable to its original form. Email and/ or a task management software are ideal.

When working on a project, it's always very important that to pick the right communication channel. In my experience, I prefer email as the most accurate communication channel. When communicating with my team, I try as much as I can to be clear and straight to the point so as to elicit feedback. Of course, working on software or CI/CD project feedback is paramount as it helps you to detect bugs at the early stage.

I'm still learning to communicate effectively, but here are a few pointers I've picked up along the years: there's a massive difference between the way you communicate with stakeholders and other devs. With other devs, the conversation should be concise, be specific, clear, and above all, given context. However, when it comes to stakeholders, the interest shifts from context to business impact, from requirements to budgets and timelines. The only element common to both is the brevity of your discourse. Don't get lost in details. Don't waste time explaining superfluous tangentialities.
