2 Gather and analyze requirements

All the requirements should be documented based on each iteration with business meetings.Feasibility check should be clarified for all requirements before development starts.High-level design documents should be validated and signed off before development starts.Each feature should be divided into the small modules which will be documented in the Low-level design documents.All test cases should be documented in the system test design documents. All features should be captured in the system trace matrix(STM).It will be validated as part of user acceptance testing.

Performing Impact Analysis (to the existing matured system) is a challenging job. In Automotive world, ASPICE method (especially bi-directional traceability related Best Practices) would help in understanding the change propagation (to what phases of SDLC, the change affects) & its depth (how big it is) shall be identified, provided we use professional ASPICE tools. The change propagation would help us finalizing the stake holder (e.g. Software Designer, Validation etc.,) list.

After you have the requirements, you need to design and implement the solution that meets them. IMO, engineers (sometimes Managers as well :-) always rush to implement (code) by skipping the design. This rush behavior is a pit-fall & eventually we ended up with technical-debt. I always recommend to spend more time on design impact analysis which includes the dynamic behaviors such as the below (but not limited to). 1. Time dependencies of interactions (e.g. every 10ms) 2. Affected states of the system 3. Sequence of executions (Chain of reactions) Code is just a conversion of Design in to some language (e.g. C, C++ etc.,).

I agree with outlining the importance of maintenance. Often it is overlooked oe delayed. Maintenance will impact the quality of the system and output.
