1 Know the speaker

Being able to write is of course important, but one of the skills that will help set a speech writer apart from the others is their ability to listen. The speakers "voice" isn't one thing, but it is the overall effect of who they are as a person. The nuances in the speakers word choice, their inflection, their speaking background, and all of their life experiences. The only way to understand and to truly gather this information is from listening, and listening actively.

The first step is to understand the speaker's target audience and motivation behind the speech (What does the speaker need to achieve by delivering this speech? What are the main ideas that need to be conveyed? What does the audience need to learn from this speech?). The second step is to customise the above to the speaker's style. In order to do this, focus on what your speaker's strengths are and highlight those. You can do this by listening to the speaker's previous speeches and by asking them what their strengths and weaknesses are. In summary, make sure you understand the audience and the purpose of the speech, whilst customising this to your speaker and their strengths.

Knowing the speaker is my starting point when writing speeches. I recently wrote a keynote speech for someone with major achievements in her field. First, I read articles about her, watched her videos and listened to podcasts where she was featured. This was before interviewing her. Knowing her story before the interview enabled me to ask relevant questions and go deeper into her story, personality and goals. It can be more challenging if the speaker doesn’t have a big media presence. In this case, an interview might be the starting point to getting to know the speaker before writing their speech. I record interviews and have them transcribed to organise the material and develop themes for each speech.

This is especially important because a speech is just like a playscript -- it's a blueprint rather than the thing itself. Finishing the writing is only the first step. Hearing the speech read from the stage reveals dozens of issues, from simple word choice to overall construction. As the writer you have to be ready to rewrite and revise, and at the same time provide coaching on inflection and performance.

Understand their voice, their syntax, personality, pace Listen to how they speak normally Don’t do humor for those without the timing. Importantly show how to lead with the point not the explanation. Most lose the audience because they lead with all the support information not the lead. The vocal equivalent of burying the lead Point support not support point
