How do you coach software engineers in using methodologies?

I might suggest a 0th (zeroth) step - Understand Why Change Is Needed. What behaviour changes are you expecting from adopting a different methodology and how would those changes benefit the organization? How are the changes expected to benefit the software developers? What about the current situation is in need of changing and why?

Understanding the current project state and team dynamics before introducing or changing a methodology is pivotal. This enables tailored solutions that align with the team's needs and existing practices, minimizing resistance. I like to say that one must Experience Agile to be able to truly learn what agility feels like. While reading books and taking courses can help, this is not sufficient. Follow me on how many times I use the word "work" in various incarnations. LOL. An underlying assumption is that we are gathering together to work and achieve some generally agreed upon and understood objective (e.g., a software product). As we begin to figure out how to work, we can ask ourselves if what we are doing is working. That is, are our ways of working actually working to create the work? Or do we need to adjust and try again? Yes, a bit silly. Yet not. Measuring our working against the work is kind of a built-in coach ;-)
