However, there are some general differences between male and female voices that you should be aware of and consider when coaching your students. Typically, male voices have larger and lower larynges and longer and thicker vocal cords than female voices. This results in lower pitches, more resonance, and more overtones for male voices, and higher pitches, less resonance, and fewer overtones for female voices. However, these are not absolute rules, as there is a lot of variation within each gender and some overlap between them.
Hearing skill is a factor for me for male voices. If a male voice is musical enough to: - hear the difference in pitch between my voice and theirs - hear the pitch from the piano ...then only will I consider coaching them. In terms of other skills like breathing, tone development, and interpretation, it is a matter of getting to know the student and in the beginning, talking much about musical vision and knowing yourself.

Besides range differences and access to the mixed voice (which differ from one gender to another), one must consider a few more things: 1) the state of the female voice is very sensitive to hormonal cycle. It fluctuates a lot so in this case, teaching body awareness to female clients is very crucial. 2) Beyond gender differences, we have to consider each individual's uniqueness: size of the larynx, of the chest, of the skull, length of vocal cords etc... 3) In this era of gender fluidity, a deeper study of transgender voices is needed. Their transitions will heavily dictate how vocal coaching approach, given all the biological changes that occur. In conclusion, vocal coaches have to be able to adapt to the individuality of each client.
