4 Replace the thermal paste

To replace the thermal paste, you need to remove the heatsink and the fan from the CPU and the GPU. I generally would advise against attempting to replace the thermal paste on a GPU unless you are familiar with the procedure. It is not a job for someone who is new to computers and it is not one that requires doing unless you have to remove the shroud and fans for a reason ie switching to a water block or other aftermarket solution. Doing so involves dismantling the card to an extent that can violate your warranty depending on the manufacturer. Stick to cleaning the fans and heatsink with canned air from a foot or so away. Before doing so remove the card first after shutting down the PC safely and clearing all power from the system by holding down the power button for 30 seconds after it is unplugged.

Regarding the proper application of Thermal Paste. The paste should only be placed on the heatsink. Coat the heatsink with a thin coat as described above. A pea sized amount placed in the middle of the heatsink is more than sufficient. The paste merely improves the efficiency of the heatsink, filling holes too small for you to see and eliminating any air pockets. Air is a poor conductor of heat and this is the most important function of the paste. Too thick a layer will impede cooling however. You should replace the paste annually, once a year will suffice. It is more important to keep the vents and fans clean and to remove any dust in the case. You should do this once every 3 months. Enthusiasts will generally do both of these more often.

5 Check the cables and connectors

The cables and connectors are responsible for delivering power and data between your components. If they are loose, frayed, or damaged, they may cause instability, errors, or failures.
