In my experience, citing sources adds credibility and value to your work. By citing reliable and reputable sources to lay the foundation of your claims, you strengthen your argument and allow for further discussion on the topic. This discussion is where you should highlight your own thoughts regarding the subject as well as your observations/what you can infer from it. Rule of thumb: when in doubt, just cite it. Even if you simply gained inspiration or a seed of thought from a source, it doesn't hurt to properly acknowledge those who provided you with that knowledge prior to you writing about the topic.

If you are unfamiliar or unsure of whether you cited your source correctly, use a free online service that will help format your citations. I find using MS Word to type the report makes it easy to cite sources. For example, in a recent Annual Report, I was referring to Covid 19 statistics from the City website. So, under the chart, I wrote where the information came from and the date it was taken as the information was updated every day. In Word, it is also easy to add a footer with references or a text box with a quote with the author’s name. And, don’t forget to add photographer’s names to a picture to give them credit if it isn’t already there.
