I quick assessment could identify 3 job titles you could see yourself in. Now work backward from each of what skill set is needed and how the current demand is there for it. Now map out your understanding and skill set for each to identify an overlap. Once you’ve an overlap you can rank each based on your interest level and get a prioritized way to move forward. For example a software engineer in machine learning is one your shortlists. Now read 5-10 job descriptions and extract common skill set. Use that list to identify your overlap and talk to folks in your network or outside to under how critical the understanding of gaps are. With this exercise you’ll have a great self discovery and a path to move forward.

It's much essential to to choose your IT Speciality wisely because it is the point where you decide your carrer's path.For deciding the same ponder on some important facts like: What are your interest, your strength and weakness. A job which you dislike or one which is not of your potential is just a wastage of your time and yourself.In this era of competition, also check how much can you make out from a particular job and what are the future aspects of the same, how much growth do you see in coming future with your job. Moreover in this expanding world there are lots of different career options, so choose what you like, what your heart says because if you go ahead with your liked role, your brain will create great ways for it.

IT is made up of several areas, but everything runs around systems, if no systems, we don't need infrastructure, don't have users, data and no developers of course! If you like technology but still haven't decided which area to work in, remember that regardless of where you are, always look at the systems, your actions result in having a system that is totally applicable for use, with excellent performance and especially with well-constructed rules, this is the path to high-standard management. With efficient systems, we have productive users, the results are updated in real time, which enables assertive decision-making, whether for managers and customers. If you love processes and results, don't hesitate, create and take care of systems!

So I think it is very important to stay on top of your field, even if you are still in college. Look up jobs you want and see the requirements, what emerging technologies, like ChatGPT and OpenAI, are affecting the marketplace. It is important to be a perpetual student and always be seeking out ways to expand your skillset if you want to remain a highly marketable piece of human capital.

For example, if you enjoy helping others learn about computers, an isolated server support tech may not be your calling. However, if you love to build computers, a hardware technician job may be more of a recreation than a burden. Once you have figured out what you truly enjoy and would like to do within the IT field, it is vital to check out the various positions and see the base requirements then do some networking and talk with people in those jobs. Having the skills to do a job is one thing (and an important one), but having a job you enjoy is even better.

it is important to have a fundamental understanding of specialities related to your IT role and determine the level of understanding to be effective if you lead such a technical team. In ever-changing times it called for flexibility and adaptability, can I step in when I don't have a BA onboard to do the analysis?

I appreciated the short session they took to help me with expert knowledge about SEO and SEM. Much better than reading an article around it, it was using real-world examples. When you have these opportunities to engage such experts in their field, listen attentively, as it is their time, and come up with good questions as you follow the real-world example so that you can apply it in another initiative. Fastest way to test and get results is time box yourself. Identify 2 weeks and reach out experts in the skill set of your desire. Attend a couple of courses and actively interact with experts content on social to ask questions. Soon you’ll have a peer group and can rapidly scale your learnings.

With a biased outlook, getting industry experience will beat other options for testing the waters in a new field. Alongside, theoretical learning always complements your journey. Long-term exposure and day-to-day learning will be key factors that determine if the field is right for you and if you're right for the field. A very underrated topic is seeking/providing feedback from your peers and managers. These can spark ideas and conversations, ultimately shaping you into a better learner, and refining your goals that are more approachable.

Find what you are most interested in. Thats the key. Do you want to be a Jack of All Trades? Do you want to be a master of one particular thing? Do you want to manage and direct a team? Do you want to do projects only long enough to get them running then move on? These are the most important questions to ask yourself. My dad always said that if you can get paid for doing something you love, then you never have to work a day in your life. I agree with that statement 100%. Find what you're passionate about and go down that road and never look back.

It has been a reward to mentor several who were considering a career in IT and looking to specialize. This is what I shared with them: Think about what truly excites and motivates you. Ask yourself, is there an area where you feel like you can make a real difference? Does it stir a passion in you enough to dedicate a career to it? When you identify the specialty, do not be afraid to dive deep and focus on building a strong foundation of knowledge and expertise. The path is not always easy but the rewards can be tremendous! Be aware, though, that focusing on one specialty does mean that you might miss out on some broader experiences or opportunities to explore other areas but, the trade-off can be worth it.
