How do you choose the right statistical test for your hypothesis?

For example, use a t-test for comparing two means with normally distributed data, ANOVA for more than two groups, chi-square for categorical data, and Spearman's rank for non-parametric correlation.

Choosing the right statistical test for your hypothesis involves several key steps. First, determine your data type: categorical, ordinal, or continuous. For categorical data, use chi-square tests. For continuous data, consider t-tests or ANOVA. Next, assess the number of groups: two groups often use t-tests, while more than two use ANOVA. Firstly, it is highly required to use descriptive statistics to get a comprehensive idea about data acquired in terms of charts, graphs, tables, etc. Secondly, it is now needed to have a closer look at charts, graphs, tables, etc. once obtained, to check whether data follow generally a normal distribution (ND) and equality of variance (EV). Based on the check for ND and EV, it is finally decided to select right statistical test. For instance, if dataset is following both ND and EV, right statistical tests will be parametric tests and vice versa is true for non-parametric tests. Moreover, it is sometime needed to use parametric tests even if data don't follow ND and EV. Considering this, data are transformed i.e. squared, square root, etc.
