1 What is a QA model?

A QA model is a framework or methodology that guides how you plan, execute, monitor, and evaluate QA activities. It defines the roles, responsibilities, tools, processes, and criteria used to ensure quality services and outcomes. Additionally, a QA model can help identify and address any gaps, risks, or issues that may affect performance and reputation. There are many types of QA models available; some of the most common are Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA), Six Sigma, Total Quality Management (TQM), and ISO 9001. PDCA is a simple and iterative model that involves four steps: planning what to achieve and how, doing the actions, checking the results, and acting on the feedback to improve. Six Sigma is a data-driven and structured model that aims to reduce errors and variability in processes and outputs. TQM is a holistic and customer-focused model that involves continuous improvement of the entire practice's culture, processes, and outputs. Finally, ISO 9001 is a standard certification model that specifies requirements for a quality management system that meets customer needs and expectations; it covers seven principles such as customer focus and leadership.

In selecting a suitable QA model, practitioners should also consider tweaking models or hybridisation of models to arrive at the most suited one for the client, business context or industry. The final model of choice also needs to reflect the outcomes that the practice and the customer are looking at. Like everything already mentioned, context is everything.

When selecting the best QA model for your practice, it is important to ensure that it is implemented correctly and efficiently. This includes communicating and engaging staff and stakeholders, providing training and support, establishing and documenting QA processes and procedures, collecting and analyzing data and information, and reviewing and improving results and outcomes. It is necessary to inform and involve staff in the QA model, explain its purpose, benefits, expectations, and responsibilities. Additionally, staff should be equipped with the necessary skills, knowledge, and tools to do their job. Furthermore, QA processes and procedures should be clear, consistent, and accessible. Moreover, it is important to ensure that the data and information collected are accurate, reliable, and relevant to quality objectives. Finally, assess and report results using feedback mechanisms to identify any improvements or changes that can enhance quality performance.

Successful implementation of a QA model is contingent upon its suitability for the client. In addition to all mentioned above, the fit-gap analysis of the model to the client needs to be water tight. Furthermore, the model needs to be simple and easy to implement, otherwise a significant amount of time and efforts will have to be expended explaining the model and familiarising all stakeholders with it's workings.

To ensure the success and sustainability of your QA model, you need to align it with your practice's vision, mission, values, and goals. Additionally, integrating it with other management systems and processes is necessary. Your QA model should also be adapted to your practice's size, structure, services, outputs, culture, and environment. Involving and empowering staff and stakeholders is essential for their commitment and participation in the model. Lastly, continuously monitoring and evaluating your QA model with data and evidence will help measure and demonstrate your quality achievements.

The Japanese use Quality Control Circle groups and Kaizen continuous improvement methods. Other companies may measure Accuracy, Responsiveness, Timeliness as key indicators

In implementing business transformation QA models for instance, care needs to be taken to customise simple models like PDCA to cross sectional aspects of the program and its translation to BAU operations. Attention needs to be paid to the scope of the QA model for the client in question. There is no marginal gain in implementing a QA model who's scope of operation is way bigger than what the client needs or requires.
