How do you choose the right industrial safety equipment for your workplace?

To choose the safe equipment in my workplace or any where else; it is important to assess the sources of risks surrounding the said equipment movement, duly evaluating the volume of production required, and the amount of resources in interaction with such equipment. In no case I accept the presence of an Equipment without insurance policies, calibration certificates and valid equipment and operator licenses.

When identifying hazards, one important thing to do is to work together with the supervisor or workers at that particular area you're looking at. You need to carry out the risk assessment together with the job supervisor, this is because they know and understand the job a lot better than you do. When you ask questions during risk assessment, you end up discovering more hazards then you would have if you worked alone.

For example, the helmets for a normal construction job will not be a good choice for jobs in an electrical area. If the safety equipment is not comfortable and does not fit right, your workers will find excuses not to wear them or there is a high chance that the PPE will be worn in a wrong manner. It is better to invest in better quality PPE that fits better and protects better so workers will do their jobs safer.

In my experience, I've realised that a major percentage of workers do not like to use some PPE, just because they feel uncomfortable with it. The comfort and fit of the equipment with your workers is very important, if not taken care of, compliance will not be met. Gloves must not be too loose or tight, helmets must be adjustable and individual equipment must fit the worker using them.

While workers should be trained to use PPE properly, sometimes worker monitoring with tools like Computer vision is necessary to ensure that workers not only have the right PPE but are also wearing it properly.

To assess the effectiveness of training it would be beneficial to consider implementing pre and post-tests. For eg., before a LOTO training, distribute a pre-test assessing employees knowledge of effective LOTO implementation. After the training, conduct a post-test covering the same topics to gauge improvement. By analyzing the scores we can ensure whether the training is impactful and identify areas for further improvement.

The application and purpose of every equipment should be communicated to every worker. Training workers on the use, limitation and care of their equipment will ensure better use of the equipment. After training, workers compliance can be monitored by occasional checkups, and also encouraging the workers and helping them to understand the purpose of the equipment.

When selecting industrial safety equipment, I prioritize thorough training and ongoing monitoring for my team. It's crucial that each member comprehends the equipment's purpose, operation, and maintenance procedures to ensure their safety. Providing clear instructions, demonstrations, and consistent feedback fosters a culture of safety consciousness. Regular checks on compliance and performance help identify any lapses or areas needing improvement. Encouraging open communication for reporting issues or suggestions further enhances equipment effectiveness and worker safety.

Maintainance and care of equipment is not usually enough. For proper evaluation and update of equipment, risk assessment is needed. Regular inspection of the work area will reveal if there are new changes that needs new control, and hence new equipment. Regular risk assessment leads to regular evaluation of equipments and regular update.

This includes reviewing the manufacturer's manual, developing standard operating procedures, and conducting a thorough risk assessment with stakeholder participation to identify hazards during all equipment phases. Evaluating risks, considering existing controls, and determining additional measures as per the hierarchy of controls to minimize residual risk to an acceptable level. Documenting this process and ensuring the implementation of corrective actions, with periodic reviews, is crucial for maintaining safety.
