This may not be a very popular opinion among fellow coaches but I would say don't get too distracted by how coaches market themselves (i.e. executive coach or career coach). Instead, focus on being clear about why you want coaching and what you want to achieve first. Then irrespective of their label, go on a search to find the person that you feel can help you best. That person might be an executive coach, a career coach, a leadership coach, life coach, etc. and what matters is that the coach can work well with you against your goal.

EC focuses on developing leading skills to lead the team better and impact the organisation's performance, career coaching focuses on enhancing one's career whether within or out of the organisation. To choose between the two, ask, what the purpose of the coaching is. If it is to enhance the individuals' career prospects then it is career coaching and if it is to sharpen the leader(s) impact as leaders of a department/section, then it is executive coaching. It is important to different genres of coaching as these confuse a lot of practitioners.

If you're looking to advance or pivot your career, then you'll need someone who specialises in career coaching. If you're looking at how to improve your leadership capabilities, improve your impact and results or tackle a particular challenge relating to how you feel at work then executive coaching will be more suitable.

Like any investment, it’s imperative to do your research when choosing the right coach for you. Some areas to think about: - Chemistry & Fit - do you get on well with them? Do you like their style & approach? They should offer a no-obligation discovery call so you can get to know each other, discuss objectives from coaching etc - Are they certified? This one can be controversial as you don’t need a qualification to be a coach. But in my view, it’s essential for a coach to have the right qualifications & accreditation in coaching itself (ICF or equivalent accredited course) so you can be sure they know what they’re doing. - Do they invest in themselves with regular CPD and regular supervision? - Ask for testimonials

Referrals or previous testimonials are a good way to start searching for a right fit. Knowing what you are looking for is essential to shortening the search process. Hence knowing where you want to aim as a direction in outcome is a good start. If its leadership in business, an Executive coach would work. If you are not clear if you are on the right path, a session with an Executive coach would determine that, or a career coach would dive right into career coaching.

In my experience, most of the impact of coaching is achieved when the coach and coachee are firstly clear about the areas of disatisfaction, then what is to be achieved/ vision. Those then need to be buttressed by agreeing on the first steps and the 'coachee' believing that they can change or achieve the intended goal/vision. The coach then takes the 'coachee' through this process providing guidance and support to a willing 'cochee' . Essentially it is through being clear 'where we are now' and 'where we want to be'

In my experience, the people who get the most out of their coaching and achieve great results for themselves, are those who are prepared to take imperfect action, feel the fear and do it anyway and practice the things they have found hard to do previously. They reflect and adjust according to their experiences and they are not afraid to make mistakes. Having a beginner mindset is essential as is the recognition that without the work the transformation doesn't happen. Only reading and taking in the wisdom or talking about what could be done won't get the results. For some people, this is the hardest part. You don't need all the knowledge and wisdom to start. Just begin with what you have and where you are at.

The ones that take the most out from coaching are the ones that commit to self development, that are willing to take action. That accept their circumstances and take accountability for themselves.
