There is a place and use for both expensive, high end hand tools (snap on, Matco, Cornwell, ect), and for cheap tools (harbor freight, craftsman, ect). For example, I personally have hand wrenches that are snap on all the way up to 1 1/4" . After that I have the jumbo wrench sets from harbor freight. Honestly it's all personal preference. For me, the job is already hard enough, so why add in the frustration of cheap ratchets, or wrenches that round everything off. I always tell new mechanics to buy what you like to use. I personally have a wide variety of tool brands in my toolbox. For example, I bought the long matco double end ratcheting wrenches specifically for bell housing bolts on Deere graders.

I have full sets of snap on sockets to 2 in and same with harbor frieght and tractor supply. They all rust the same in a service truck. I was working on a deere loader not long ago and broke 3 of the same size sockets on a bolt. So I welded one of the Harbor frieght sockets to the bolt and let my 1/2 milwaukee sing on it and got it out. Brought the socket in with the bolt welded to it and they gave me a new one.

One thing to always remember is to consider ones safety when using and therefore affecting how we choose these tools. Safety can be decided by factors such and tool and machine guards, strength of materials and visible wear and tear, all these and more are important factors when choosing tools.

Not all spanners that have the words "chrome vanadium" casted on it, is good quality. I found quite a few of them that just break. So I rather stay with tools that is known to me, that at least have a manufacturer name on it. Like Geodore or Kennedy. Good make but also not too expensive

I have been told the right tool for the right job. Growing up and in the industry money had been an issue so we were forced to make our own tools to get the job done. When I was hired on with a company that had money for maintence it was cool. I was able to order the right tool for the right job. In my profession and personal use I now get the right tool for the right job. Cost effective, less down time and most of all safer.

Some people like the laptop with OEM software, some people like off brand like Diesel Laptops because of their support and ease of use . I prefer Bosch scan tools especially the HDS 1000 with off road loaded on it as well. I can plug into anything from Freightliner to John Deere 1050 dozers, Takeuchi machines, JLG, to DynaPac machines. I’m not trying to make the machines have a higher road speed just keep the machines working and the Bosch HDS 1000 does that. Besides Bosch makes most of the fuel systems and ecm’s on many machines so why wouldn’t you use the diagnostic made by them.
