Selection of materials plays a vital role in sustainability of any kind of structure. We should always try to use the recycled or recyclable materials for our design. As a designer we can help our world always a better place. Example - instead of using RCC we can always opt for Steel for construction of all kind of structures especially bridges , due to steel high strength to weight ratio, By virtue of which the column and beams will be slender and more usable space can be available below the bridge. Secondly - Steel is salvageable so whatever cost which is incurred to construct bridge, will be an investment on materials also.

In my experience the soil testing is the most important step essentially to be done before starting any kind of design not only bridge but every type of structure. It has been observed that due to lack of data the design could be under or over reinforced. On top of that improper survey may lead to time and cost overruns. As in efficient engineer we should always fully ascertain all the shortcomings of site in order to come up with an optimum design.

Standard operating procedure must be prepared inline with design standards and respective code provisions. Before installation at site, mock up assembly must be done at site or at manufacturing plant depending on the type of bridge steel/rcc.
