How do you become a senior business system analyst?

Having strong understanding of the business domain, along with knowing about the market and competitors is crucial. Alongside, it is important to understand the organization strategy and goals to align with them. With strong knowledge on domain you can have good command on stakeholders when explaining about the domain.

To be a senior business analyst, you must be visionary person with skill of listening, understanding current business requirements translate these requirements in technical language and able to transpose current state in more effective and efficient one. Strong communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration and team building are critical to this role. Experience and exposure to multiple business domain will be plus point.

Obviously, some formal background would be a good place to start i.e. first degree in the relevant discipline like Mathematics and statistics, business process, commerce, information systems etc. Critical to this role would be an in-depth knowledge of the business, its drivers, strategic goals (plans), policies, regulatory requirements, relevant international standards applicable, risks, mitigants etc. Working knowledge on the approach to take depending on analysis methodology to be used. Clear documentation of success factors for the system and being able to translate business requirements into a system requirement for the techies and vice versa. Most importantly ensuring that all stakeholders (internal and external) are aware of progress.

Prompting with right questions makes all the difference during requirements eliciting phase. Answers to critical questions will ease and reduce design rework. And questions should be to probe the business knowledge but keeping in mind the technology implementation. So balancing both business and technology will help create the right documentation.

For example: We often come across clients who do not have a complete view of the challenges of their business at that moment and other times through our analysis of the "numbers", we see beyond them, and at this moment communication and relationship skills It is the difference between the success and failure of your project. The good news is that these softskills can be developed at any time.

Many times it's not the best solution which is good , it's the right solution which is fit for the purpose .

As a senior BSA, you are required to solve complex problems. These are problems that requires you to understand the business, understand the inherent risks and subsequently evaluate the potential options. Often times when you are evaluating a potential solution, you'd find drawbacks with the potential solutions. That's where you have to apply your critical thinking to identify if you can either refine the solutions further or identify any potential workarounds.

All of the above points are crucial. But I believe one of the key areas that many BAs let themselves down is a lack of time interacting with developers. Better understanding of the development lifecycle, the coding languages used, the teams proficiency in them and their skill sets is crucial to understanding the hands on complexities of system changes and got better understanding your back log.

This is one aspect of a BSA that is key. We are living a world of technology that is ever changing. Personally I feel at times I get dated myself, however being in the consulting profession it is important for me to ensure I keep up with the latest and greatest technology trends and pick up one or two topics that are of interest to me and go deeper. That way you can inspire thought leadership in your conversations, and possibly help solve a business problem through the use of that technology

Part of continuous learning and improvement cycle is also to document lessons learnt, success/failure stories and creating case studies with findings that can act as an excellent source for future assignments in a similar environment.

I invite you to reflect on the premise of "Learning from Error." Which on the one hand seems to be known by everyone, when in practice our personal tolerance (towards ourselves, towards others) is often very low. "Learning from the Mistake" is understanding the root cause that produced it and understanding how I can do it better next time or avoid making it again.
