How do you become a safety officer?

Different country will have different requirement on this issue. But generally, you need to complete your diploma or degree in OSH, or any other related course or training related to OSH. Then you will need to collect several years of working experiences and then apply to become a competent Safety Officer. You may need to undergo interview with the local safety authorities also.

I would prefer one to under take a bachelors degree preferably in an engineering course. Why? The hierarchy of hazard control needs one to have basic knowledge in engineering to apply the engineering controls. After that, One can obtain a safety certification preferably in the area of interest and get certified by the professional body.

I would like to start this by not calling a safety representative an officer. The stigma associated with an officer dictates that one is enforcing rules or policies. If one was to look a career in safety then I would suggest looking at job postings and what employers are looking for. Higher education in the field of safety is very important; however thinking on your feet is more important. Supporting workers by ensuring they not only know their safety responsibilities but to accurately communicate why. These are traits of a strong safety representative.

Education prepared you for the safety officer role on the surface only. There are other attributes which makes a person a safety officer like approachability, openness to listen when non-safety function persons talk about safety, tenacity to chase what maybe sometimes a losing cause & more importantly putting one’s self in the shoes of the others on whom the safety procedure, initiatives & targets are put across to follow.

A Safety Officer needs skills to: >Use physics, mathematics, chemistry & engineering methods/techniques to a range of activities. >Solve problems, not correctable by common methods. >Conduct comprehensive analysis of issues which require fast decisions/actions to solve unique situations. >Investigate/predict/anticipate issues that could impact standards & applications. >Advise/promote/implement new, safer & healthier, technologies, SOPs or equipment, regardless of resulting costs, production or schedule changes. At the same time promoting industry acceptance. >Evaluate/recommend economic and technical feasibility of current, updated or new engineering & administrative controls, as well as PPE. Prioritizing the safety of those at risky jobs.

Get some practical experience first in the area you want to operate in. E.G. Construction, oil or gas, plant or equipment, health, facilities management etc. That coupled with some formal course work to support your area of interest makes for a good start, having a coach and or mentor makes for a solid grounding in safety.

People skills are a must, 85% of being a safety professional is public relations. Once you develop relationships & trust, buy-in is much easier

Duties of a safety officer are but not limited to: 1. Identifying potential hazards in the workplace and assessing the associated risks to develop strategies for mitigation. 2. Providing safety training to employees, educating them on proper procedures and precautions. 3. Investigating accidents, incidents, or near misses to understand root causes and prevent future occurrences. 4. Developing and implementing emergency response plans, coordinating drills, and ensuring preparedness for various scenarios. 5. Conducting regular inspections of the workplace to identify and correct safety deficiencies. 6. Ensuring proper use and maintenance of PPE to safeguard employees from potential hazards.

The ultimate goal of a safety professional should be to create a healthy safety culture at the workplace, this will drive employees to perform their job safely and excel and then they will be the ones who detect hazards and unsafe conditions, prevent unsafe act and stop any violation. Your duties should not only be limited to raising awareness, inspections, trainings ..... etc. but most important is to build trust between yourself and employees and raise their self-esteem so they can work safely independently and your job is to advice when needed.

Identify Risks and opportunities and define strategy for managing workplace, materials, process and other operations within and beyond factory boundary is the prime responsibilities. Apart, Ensuing Legal and other compliance, guiding Top management for their role and responsibilities for safe operation of site activities and secondary but most important duty. The training and Awareness is the third most important duty. Others are the secondary works which are to be done by a good safety officer.

First off, agreed, safety officer is a harsh term that needs to be destroyed. We are not police officers, we are there to help guide and support our employees. Safety takes patience, understanding, a great amount of communication and skills to help find ways to make your workplace as safe as possible. It means working as a team, and knowing that you cannot solve problems sitting behind a desk. It means walking with your team, coming up with solutions that work best for everyone, while allowing employees to still have a voice and opinion. It’s about being open to the fact that you will never have the answers all of the time.. but working every day to find them. End goal… ensuring your people get home safe… each and every day!

An assortment of all 5 attributes in the right proportion. Over and above all this you need hands on field experience especially in green field projects like construction and expansion. We never wish for accidents to occur but if you are fortunate to encounter them and survive you will learn vital lessons of emotional intelligence which transcend any other form of certification. Its easy to plan when things are normal but vital lessons and psychological approaches are acquired when things lose control

The top HSE problems most commonly reported by HSE professionals are training, compliance, and time management. Training and compliance are critical aspects of any safety manager's job. But it can be difficult to manage and prioritize these tasks.

Great Post firstly. Agree that SAFETY OFFICER term has a regulatory meaning and is a really old way of looking at the HSE profession. We are really change agents, and only become really regulatory as with everyone at time when condition or practices are IDLH. We are that link that holds line management accountable and responsible until proven otherwise, identifying areas for change. We also view responsibility of individuals, coaching training etc. Supporting line management I believe we are HSE change practices, agents, faciliators or other. Starting out as a new Safet Officer really does not describe what we actually do.

Don’t become a safety officer, that mindset & approach timed out. Not seeking to offend, trying to keep this realistic. Given the level of safety maturity in GB, isn’t safety coaches the way forward?

Nobody should strive to be a ‘safety officer’ HEALTH And Safety should go hand in hand if we continue to focus on safety alone we will not be able to reduce the burden of ill health in any industry

Safety is a passion. If you cannot embrace this you are not going to be successful. You have to be prepared to put your neck out and not care if you get it cut off. You have to stick to your principles and ethics so you can look yourself in the mirror.
