To be a reporter, it is crucial to build a foundation, gain experience, and build a self-portfolio as well as stay updated and adaptable.

Be curious about the world around you. That means reading, listening to and watching all kinds of publications and other media to become well-rounded and understand important issues happening in society. This will help develop important critical thinking skills. Also, exposing yourself to strong examples of writing will help you learn the craft of writing. Developing good listening and conversation skills is also important for conducting interviews. Practice speaking to people in-person so that you have the confidence to ask questions and interact with other folks you don't know well. Finally, work on technical skills such as capturing video /audio, video editing, podcasting, data reporting, infographics, etc.

A journalism bachelor's degree is not required for journalists. Many journalists have degrees related to the beats that they cover. For example, a journalist who writes about science might have a biology degree. In practical terms, people who are interested in doing journalism should complete courses and/or read books to learn about reporting skills, editing skills, media ethics, web and graphic design, newsroom practices, and media software.

A degree is the traditional way of becoming a reporter. But with modern technology especially smartphones, different people become reporters of events that are happening in their surroundings. In hard-to-reach areas, when events of public interest happen such as disasters, accidents, mistreatments by different government organs or celebrations people tend to use their smartphones and report these events. Someone may not have a degree but has been able to report the happenings because of being at the scene at the right time. In the long run with popularity, a person may be motivated to search for stories and reports because people are news searchers. Pictures and very few words are enough to make people interested in a certain report.

Building a good portfolio comes in handy. Potential employers who have little time for a interview can sample your work when you are not physically available. Share your work on LinkedIn and other public sites. Build your brand.

I believe that getting something done and improving it over time is one of the ways to building a portfolio. Keep writing, before you know it, you have a massive portfolio for growth

In my experience it happened upon me. But going by the books, first you need training or learn on the job like I did, know the basics and the fundamentals of reporting and most importantly, have a passion, curiousity also helps to follow the stories as the break and develop. Remember as much as you’d need passion for the job, you also need to be armed with the essentials of it. You can’t just be a doctor cos you love surgeries, you have to go to med school and horsemanship and then become a doctor.

In today’s times, building a portfolio is as (if not more) important as getting a degree. By staying up to date with current happenings and trends and by keeping your eyes and ears open as well as having an open mind and can do spirit- one can delve into the world of reporting. Getting internships early on in life during summer or winter breaks in school and college, sets you apart and gives an added advantage and exposure to the world of reporting. A strong will, determination and seeing all angles of a story without any biases (personal, religious, cultural or gender) just adds to the advantage of being reporter material. Networking has been the most helpful in my journey. While I have a degree in journalism I haven’t worked most of my career in there field. In the last 3 years I’ve managed to pick up various journalism gigs by networking. I reach out to contacts. I attend various conferences where I can strategically meet people that might be helpful as I get back into the field. I also create content that anyone looking for someone with my skill set can see and then share. Networking can involve sharing your work publicly so others can see you capabilities and keep you in mind for future opportunities.

Networking provides ability to build skills, knowledge, partnership, updates and advocacy, interactions, exchange and large support from the network. All are crucial to improve and build a career as a reporter.

It is important to be clinical and disinterested as a reporter, to be able to tell the wheat from the chaff and to report matters as they are and not as the subject would like them to be. Which is not to say you cannot have sympathy or compassion for a cause or a side to the story, but to be able to not let your compassion and sympathy colour how you see the facts.

Read Quality Newspapers, Magazines, Books and Digital Media I am constantly amazed when I encounter people who want to be writers but are not serious readers, or want to work in journalism but do not stay up on what is going on in the world. To do well in the field you need to be familiar with the best work being done. It is all part of feeding your brain for future ideas. Certainly, quality visual and audio media have much to offer, but reading is a different experience entirely, and people who tell me they don't read --? with no shame-- send off red flags about how informed they are on anything. A quote often attributed to Mark Twain is fitting here: " The man who does not read has no advantage over the man who cannot read."

Ser repórter é ter habilidades técnicas que podem ajudar muito você no dia a dia, como a mínima no??o de enquadramentos de camera, áudio, qualidade da imagem, edi??o, uso da voz, entre outros fatores.

Two great pieces of advice that I received when I was starting my journalism career, and I still use both in peripheral work: 1. If you're stuck getting started writing an article, pretend you're writing an email to a friend telling them what just happened. It outlines and organizes your reporting and helps explain the broad scope of activities to a reader who might not know the relevant background. 2. Don't be afraid to ask what you might perceive to be a dumb question (or what a specific acronym means). Your source 99.9% of the time will appreciate you wanting to be accurate. It's better to feel dumb asking a question to one person than be wrong and actually look dumb to hundreds of thousands of people (and go back and correct yourself).
