How do you become a physicist?

Typically, being a physicist requires having a solid background in mathematics, physics, and allied fields. It is imperative to get a bachelor's degree in physics or a closely related discipline before moving on to more advanced degrees like a master's or doctorate. Research, internships, and group projects can all offer priceless real-world experience. It is essential to continue learning new things, keep up with physics developments, and network with other scientists. The ability to solve problems and have a strong desire to comprehend the laws of the universe are essential for success in physics.

Choosing the academic path involves obtaining a bachelor's degree in physics or a related field, followed by advanced degrees like a master's or Ph.D in a specialized area.

In most countries the path is divided in 3-4 main steps: two-grades graduate studies after high school i.e. bachelor and master degree, PhD, post-doc contracts, and then, if lucky enough a tenure is the final goal. For the first two grades both physics and engineering (as well as Maths, for theorists) can be chosen, while, normally PhD is almost compulsory in Physics, at least to gain credits to concur for the following steps. The ways to access to PhD depend strongly on the country you apply: in Italy (and France, I think), there is a public contest at each University, with some placese reserved to foreigners, an it is compulsory to have the master degree, while in US/UK and related, it is by colloquium and BSc enough.

Everything depends on the path you will choose but in any case the first step to became a physicists is to have solid knowledge in physics or/ and mathematics. Often one start with a bachelor degree in physics, mathematics, astronomy or engineering. In my specific case I completed a bachelor degree in Physics, after I did a master degree still in physics. During the master I started to move in the direction of nuclear and nuclear astrophysics but still the degree itself was general "Master degree in Physics". After the degree I started a PhD in the specific field of experimental nuclear astrophysics and I'm continuing in the same field now after the PhD.

The practical experience plays and important role in my opinion. This kind of experience can start with the bachelor thesis which is one of the first steps. There are also different internships that one can do during the studies. In my personal experience the summer student program that I did during the first years of masters program helped me to choose the research field. That time I worked in a small project in nuclear astrophysics with a great professor and today I'm still working in the same research field.

For the experimentalist, the more you work in a lab and connect with technicians and more experienced colleagues the better it is as well as for the theorist exchanging experiences and techniques with colleagues is an asset. In my experience, as an experimentalist, I spent two years in a lab during my master degree and three years in a medium/large experiment at CERN during PhD, ad it has been the most formative period in my working life. Never underestimate the experience you can gain from an experienced technician, as it can be more useful than theory (though theory is the base). Sometimes, also epic failures bring to new ideas and are useful to next steps.

Like I said earlier, you need to conduct original research and develop your skills in physics. Also you can do internships in renowned industries doing research/work in your field. This allows you to you to apply the skills you learn during your research in real world settings and overall this allows you to ma you garner experience.

Searching and applying for jobs and grants is part of the career of a physicist. Of course one should not lose time in applying randomly but, should be always ready and able for application. One should understand the difference between applying in industry or academia and according to that adjust the CV and the skills, what might be important for academia has a lower impact in industry or the other way around. Being in the right moment with the right people is also a very big plus!

??To become a physicist first you must clear the formal education i.e.,class 12 from a recognised board and then pursue a bachelor’s course in physics followed by a master’s degree. ??Then you can start looking for jobs after completing the basic education in the physics field , may have to start with entry-level jobs and with time and expertise make the way up to higher designations. ??But a PhD degree can greatly help in career growth and continuously keep learning in the physics field your major area of interest. ??Try to learn recent upto date trends in physics through online sources , mentor and you also need solid speaking & writing skills in this field for research presentation in the conference and journal publications.

One thing I have found is never mind the quote " you can't teach an old dog new tricks" you keep the mindset that you are never to old or experienced to learn from a master. Keep learning keep growing and share your knowledge and keep networking. Attend courses and presentations as you always come away with more knowledge and contacts in your field should it be Physics or any other discipline.

Never stop studying! Knowledge is in continuous evolution and it's plenty of people working on everything. Be eager to learn also from fields apparently far from your specialization, as, re-inventing the wheel is useless if somebody has already solved the problem elsewhere. Never be ashamed to ask, to the Nobel prize winner as to the student behind you; there is no stupid question. Look for a research group that can offer a possibility to grow.
