How do you become an international director?

I think the best soft skills to have are : - curiosity, willing to learn constantely. In this case curiosity to know the culture, languages - adaptability, facing as natural the changes - openmind/out of the box thinking, analyze and thinking with some different angles and approach

First things first: -To learn English, you do not have to go to a private institute, I learned English by simply watching movies and TV shows. -Then apply for an international job, Work&Travel is the way I did it, working onboard Royal Caribbean cruises. -ADAPT to the environment you arrive to. -Once you get used to the language and you have fluency with it, improve it. -Come back home and start applying for international companies - remote jobs.

First of all you need to be prepared to do the job so someoe can confidently unleash you onto international clients, suppliers or teams. Work on your intercultural competence, learn languages and travel. Be the person everyone knows is open minded and eager to explore new cultures, exotic food and makes quickly friends in all parts of the planet. THis sort of attitude makes a great global sales diretor, leader of multicultural teams or smart negotiater on the international floor.

Accenture encourages and suggest us employees to arrange lunch or coffee with colleagues, being curious about what they do, and who they are.

-In each job you have, give ALWAYS the extra mile, if it doesn't work in the long term, you won't regret it. -DO NOT TAKE BUSINESS AS PERSONAL. -Listen to the constructive feedback given to you by the Project leads or the managers. -Be always proposing new ways of getting the job done.

it is very important to establish networks of cooperation and interaction with your environment, in order to learn from it and also to actively contribute to the development of our communities and markets, we should always try to contribute with our knowledge and experience to create a better world.

Step one can be joining an internationally open minded network in your home country. This can be either business or cultural related. Reputation can only be built by credibly acting and performing over time, in that regard an internatonal career is no different from a national one. It will always be dependent on how you treat the people around you, in particular those who are not in direct work contact or reporting line.

When writing a blog or a Linkedin post , do not hesitate to tell the truth , or your vision of the truth. Do that with respect and with well chose words so as to convey that you know what you are talking about. Intelligent people respect someone who can argument their vision of the world economy clearly.

Irrespective of where you operate in the world, the ability to motivate, enthuse, coach and encourage your team is the single most critical skill you need to develop. In different cultures you may need to adapt and refine your people skills but if you can do that then you will be a success

If you have spent many years learning, gaining real experience and tons of industry stealing wisdom, then you may have the genuine confidence and knowledge to work operate and importantly drive the overseas business regardless of country state or region. But it’s about your real ability and track record to deliver 100%. Not to bull your way in, not to blag it or impersonate someone as you will get found out. It’s about understanding the culture and giving respect, and not telling them how to run there country. Just think many years on you can look back and maybe smile and say ‘it was better to of been a has been, than a never been’!

Here are the key steps I’ve found crucial in my own journey: 1. Cultivate a Global Mindset: Embrace diversity, different cultures, and perspectives. Expand your horizons. 2. Develop Leadership skills. Inspire others, build teams, and foster collaboration across borders 3. Acquire Relevant Experience: Gain experience in roles that involve international exposure. 4. Continuous Learning and Education 5. Networking and Relationship Building: Establish a strong network of contacts both domestically and internationally. 6. Adaptability and Resilience: The global business landscape is dynamic and ever-changing. The journey to becoming an international director is not a destination but a continuous process of growth and learning.

Having great peers and mentors is of course essential for an international career. This is not only true for international careers but in general. Sorround yourself with people who are better than you and know more, learn from those who have made it, but alsi learn from their mistakes

It's all about communication. Of course you should develop you technical skills both soft and hard but at last being international means knowing many non-technical topics. More you would be aware of different cultures, tastes, customs, etiquettes, preferences etc., more you can lead diversified teams

Actively ask for the assignments that nobody else is willing to do and become the "go-to" for difficult issues. Investigate which are going to be the future markets and prepare the entry strategy in accordance to the corporate vision.

I love challenges. They support my personal development. I believe that we need challenges in order to know more and satisfy our hunger. A key point here is to be courageous and take concrete steps. Only those who walk can move forward, otherwise it's just wasted time

Working internationally for 15+ years and also be married for 15+ years my clear advise is to very clearly and detailed sit down with your family and define the rules of the game (will the whole family move or not, how often will you be in your home country, with national holidays need to be honored, birthdays etc). I have a written agreement with my family for each step of my career. My wife and my kids have the same. It helps

Know when to say NO. Life and Health are not worth risking just because the climb up the corporate ladder demands it. Know your limits and respectfully communicate them. Have a very, very good insurance plan for you and all of your team memebers in place in case something happens. Companies have to accept that as a cost of hiring the best and if they don't, then change company.

Balanced life leading you to learn effectively about other cultures and people. For that you should fix your timetable that enables you to remain balanced with your family and friends.

Be open, be bold! Remeber that pursuing an international career is not self-sufficient. Be very clear what you want and what you do not want. And once you are ready go for it, it is a very rewarding journey

Interact with the expatriate community of the countries where you want to work, get to know the culture and establish a network which can recommend you as a honest, hard working and positive person.

The first key is to start abroad, take any oppotunity you can to go and live a abroad, in the country on your wish list. There is no better way to understand your international market than to be in it and experience it, it will shift your pre-conceptions and give you keys to approach your stakeholders in a better way.
