How do you become an information technology development team lead?

Becoming an IT development team lead involves mastering technical skills and leadership qualities. Start with a strong foundation in coding, gain experience, and mentor junior developers. Develop self-awareness, communication, motivation, and project management skills. Learn conflict resolution and build a network. Consider formal training, volunteer for leadership roles, and remember that the transition is gradual. Consistent effort will lead to success.

Being ready to venture into that world of the unknown in ICT world and it's support to work cannot be ignored by any leader. It may be fearful, doubtful, but the best way is to give it a trial and learn on the go. No good manager is without technological skills.

One of the important thing to remember as a development team lead is to not try and do everything by yourself. It might be tempting but avoid doing so. Try and learn about your team members. What motivates them, their skills, strengths and weakness. Create a learning path for individual team member and check on progress at regular interval. Another important thing to remember is to setup learning path for yourself too. DO NOT assume now it’s just managing a team, I don’t need to learn anything new. You would still need to put out fires regularly. Seek continuous feedback from your seniors and team members and find room for improvement.

It’s really important to also assess your motives and what the position will actually entail. I’ve seen many individual contributors convince themselves that things won’t change much, but ultimately the roles and responsibilities of a team lead are quite different from those of an individual contributor. If you are making the move solely for a salary bump or more personal acclaim, it may not be the right move for you. I often refer to the transition from team member to team lead as going from being a star fisherman (the person who catches the most fish) to being a fishing instructor (the person who is responsible for teaching others how to fish). The skillsets (and reward systems) for succeeding in these two jobs are vastly different.

One key to being successful in a supervisory or management role over an IT development team includes developing a fluency in the language of your teams. While you do not need to be a technical expert in all areas of technology, you do need to be able to communicate effectively with your team which will likely have diverse areas of expertise in the IT space. Understanding the fundamental elements of what goes into the work of your team will impact your ability to think strategically, address roadblocks, and properly resource your team. Developing your leadership abilities will also be critical to properly coaching, developing, and empowering your team members to stay engaged and motivated.

Look at your current network and ask them, as appropriate, for the names of people they might provide who are in the role you seek. Before interviewing any potential professional, know what you want to ask, and write down the questions so you gain the information you're seeking without wasting anyone's time.

As a team lead, you'll be increasing the number of stakeholders you deal with as well as the stakes. It's important to master your communication skills across diverse stakeholders and consider multiple scenarios.

Effective communication with your team is the key. Giving KPIs is easy. KPIs must have a clear objective, approved tools/equipment uses with a clear standard and not forgetting the timeline. Terminal Performance Objective must be shared with clear expectations and goals to achieve with the required standards. Every team leader is a platoon leader. Platoon can achieve the victories when tools are provided, and clear objective is clear to achieve. Communication regularly helps maintain the progress chart. Teamwork achieves better results.
