How do you become a histology technologist?

1 Education and certification

To become a histology technologist, you need to have at least a bachelor's degree in histotechnology, biology, or a related field. You also need to complete an accredited histotechnology program that includes both theoretical and practical training. The program usually takes one or two years and covers topics such as anatomy, physiology, chemistry, microbiology, immunology, and histology. After completing your education, you need to pass a national certification exam administered by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) to become a certified histology technologist (HTL).

2 Skills and abilities

As a histology technologist, it is essential to have various skills and abilities to perform tasks effectively and accurately. Attention to detail is paramount as strict protocols and procedures must be followed to ensure the quality and safety of tissue samples and slides. Additionally, manual dexterity is required to handle delicate instruments and tools, such as microtomes, scalpels, and pipettes, to cut, stain, and mount the tissue samples. Technical knowledge of the principles and methods of histology is also necessary for successful completion of tasks. Furthermore, communication skills are needed in order to communicate with other laboratory staff, pathologists, researchers, and clients. Writing clear and concise reports and documentation of findings and procedures is also essential.

3 Work environment and duties

Histology technologists are usually employed in hospitals, clinics, research institutes, or educational institutions. They work in a laboratory environment where they are exposed to potentially hazardous chemicals and biological materials, and must take the necessary safety precautions such as wearing gloves, masks, goggles, and lab coats. Additionally, they may need to use computers and software to store, process, and analyze data and images. Generally speaking, these technologists work full-time; however, they may be required to work overtime, weekends or holidays depending on the workload and deadlines.

The duties and responsibilities of histology technologists vary depending on their role and employer. These duties can include collecting tissue samples from patients or clients; labeling and logging the samples; preserving the samples using chemicals, heat or cold; embedding the samples in paraffin wax or resin; cutting thin sections of the samples using a microtome or a cryostat; staining the sections with dyes, antibodies or enzymes; mounting the sections on glass slides; examining the slides under a microscope or a scanner; identifying any abnormalities or problems in the samples or slides; performing quality control tests; cleaning and sterilizing equipment and instruments; ordering supplies and materials; and maintaining records.
