How do you become a geophysical consultant?

To become a consultant in any field, you must be relevant and extremely knowledgeable. It is important to choose a subject that has wide interest and economic value. It helps tremendously to have advanced degrees in this subject and to both publish timely articles in appropriate journals and give oral presentations at professional societies. It is one thing to be an expert in a field but if you don't showcase your expertise, no one will know your capabilities. Hence, no one will be asking you to consult for them. I had to choose between unconventional E&P and deepwater E&P. I chose deepwater E&P on a global basis and for me, it was the right decision.

In my experience I did receive formal education as an Applied Geophysicist (Bachelors) and also a Masters Degree in Offshore and Ocean Technology. Apart from classroom experience had a lot of practical experience acquiring data on the field with various teams, data processing and data interpretation in a Laboratory and Work Station. The Soft skills are also essential as you have to network to keep getting projects. Also remote acquisition of dataset have become available due to data archiving from sensors and satellite. It’s fun and interesting to have practiced as a Geophysicist applying my knowledge in various sectors of society.

Soft skills are of course important, but they should never be promoted above technical excellence. While I agree that as consultants we should strive for clear and cordial, persuasive communication with all stakeholders, the reality is not everyone can achieve this. In the past I have worked with other consultants who's soft skills were perhaps not the best, but this didn't detract from the excellent work they did. Admittedly their communications were often strained with some of their peers, but as a team we still benefitted from their contribution. Technical quality should always be the key parameter. Soft skills are meaningless if the work is flawed.
