How do you become a firmware architect?

To become a FW architect, first and foremost is the understanding of the hardware/Software interaction layers and to understand how you can program the hardware (MCU/CPU) to do what you want it to do, meaning understanding some of the architectural nuances, registers, buses, etc of the hardware. That will lead you to understand things like HAL (Hardware abstraction layer), Interaction of different devices at hardware level, etc. Also ability to debug the complex hardware (CPU/MCU/Memory/IO using tools such as DSO, LA, etc) subsystems would add immensley in designing and architecting the next level of systems. Other things which can help are the basics of computer / CPU/MCU/peripheral and subsystems, C/assembly programming, etc.

My journey to becoming a firmware architect blended academic foundations with diverse professional experiences in embedded software engineering. Specializing in AI, I led significant projects, emphasizing the importance of system architecture and cross-disciplinary communication. Continuous learning, certifications, and a strong portfolio underscored my path. I begin with a quote from Aristotle — “By dint of building well, you get to be a good architect”. To become a firmware architect, you have to make your hands dirty. Yes, you need to understand how hardware works by talking (through low level programming) to them till you reach a level, where you can almost feel why a peripheral or a sensor is behaving the way it is expected or otherwise. It requires low level programming using assembly language and C. You must know the use of complete tool chain and carry out compiling, debugging (which often includes single stepping) and downloading to the target hardware. There are more than what I said. Anyway you have to make your hands dirty.

Why don’t you just call yourself a firmware medical doctor while you’re at it? I’m a world-class software and embedded developer, but to call one’s self a software architect unless you’re also an NCARB certified actual architect or to call yourself an engineer without being a professional engineer in a real engineering discipline, you’re insulting, diluting and devaluing other professions by engaging in a form of “stolen valor” and you make the rest of us look like hacks to other professions. Don’t do it.

I believe more you grow in your career, your expertise and knowledge should grow parallelly. You need to hold the in-depth knowledge about technology, only then one solve real engineering challenge, let it be related to DB, process or anything for that matter. My experience says, shallow knowledge does not help after a certain point and more depth I get, I realize how less I knew. With evolving technology everyday, its hard to cope up with everything, hence its advisable to know something really deep as mostly the core concept are same.

A firmware architect should be ready to don many hats and speak many languages. A effective firmware architect is one who could easy extract the requirements from the sales and marketing team, understand the science and math from the non software subject matter expert all the while thinking like an end user. Architects role is also has a political shade to it. In my experience, the best way to learn these new technologies is to try them out! Build a basic console app that incorporates the new technology you are trying to learn so that you can discover how things work. The project doesn't need to be huge, something that can take you a few hours or days is the perfect way to learn a new skill with more detail than any YouTube tutorial or article could ever give you.

I can say the firmware development is changing faster than software development also faster than electronics design. In recent years we have seen multiple new and rich tool chains from companies like ST. MPUs and MCUs are getting stronger and now AI and machine learning also entered to firmware domain so constant learning and improving skills is essential is Firmware development domain.

Honestly firmware is an area of my career that I have had very limited experience in, funny enough, its one that I wish I had more involvement in. Especially in the interplay of firmware architecture and IoT. Fundamentally shaping how devices operate, communicate, and integrate into broader systems. I think IoT has now become an integral component of firmware architecture, so much so that vertical education and experience is tremendously helpful to build scalable and useful firmware that delivers value to the end user.
