How do you become an environmental consultant?

If there is a true pathway to become an environmental consultant I believe that at the beginning you need to have a wide medium knowledge of all what the word environment include. Years at work and your passion will then define the route you will choose. I think it is also good to start your career in a multi-disciplinary type of consultancy so to be exposed to a larger variety of projects and learning opportunities.

You become a consultant…this assumes you have knowledge/expertise on a particular subject that is beneficial to your customer. To consult is to educate a client so they may make the best possible decision that in their best interest. If it’s truly a desire, find your passion and go for it…

First, get as much knowledge as possible through training and practice. Get as much field exposure as possible to sharpen your knowledge and skills by applying all learned knowledge, concepts and theories in a real work environment. Get relevant certification(s) that empower you to offer your services to your clients in various sectors. Where applicable, get affiliated to relevant memberships where you get chance(s) to disseminate knowledge and/or exchange ideas that will enable you remain informed. Last, do not forget the power of your professional network. It's a real asset in a dynamic setup. Networks with similar minded professionals will help you gauge your resource-base against colleagues and learn from them where possible.

Pasos para convertirse en un consultor ambiental debes: 1. Poseer la instrucción (educación) especifica. 2. Debes especializarte en un tema particular. 3. Debes desarrollar habilidades en análisis de datos, redacción, comunicación, etc. En cuanto a la especialización, debes: a. Profundidad de conocimiento b. Var valor al cliente. Generalmente el cliente siempre busca al profesional que entiende su problema particular. c, Desarrollo profesional: La especialización también puede abrir puertas a oportunidades de desarrollo profesional. Puedes tener la oportunidad de liderar proyectos en tu área de especialización, presentar tus hallazgos en conferencias y publicar tu trabajo en revistas académicas.

A nivel de estudios, lo más recomendable es cursar un grado de ciencias ambientales, biología o de las ingenierías muy próximas a las disciplinas medioambientales, como o ingeniería del medio natural. A partir de esa base, es interesante ampliar conocimientos en determinadas materias que son fundamentales para ser consultor. En particular, es preciso adquirir un conocimiento profundo de la normativa ambiental, tanto en la general como en la relativa a las áreas de conocimiento en las que se pretenda desempe?ar la actividad (residuos, aguas, urbanismo, flora, fauna, impacto ambiental...). Todo ello sin olvidar la necesidad de disponer de un nivel usuario avanzado en el manejo de herramientas Office, así que un nivel al menos básico en SIG.

For me, I am a big fan of Certifications and Licensing. It keeps me current and gives me tools to be more agile and to have access to current solutions. The courses from esteem academic institutions I recently completed - Global Politics - gave the way into the current geopolitical environment. Certificate in Politics and Economics in International Energy refreshed my knowledge in traditional energy resources and added current state of renewables, hybrids, hydrogen, and local nuclear trends. As we are heading to the era of Climate Finance, I am taking a course at Columbia University on Economics on Money and Banking ! If you travel a lot, you can find study time on the plane. Interestingly, anyone can be an expert in the National Environmental Policy Act of 1970. Certification nor licensing is not required (who would have thought?). If you want to be a respectable and trusted plumber, you should be certified. If you use a plumber, one most likely would use a certified plumber. But NEPA is too broad is what I hear. Tells me the Magna Carta of environmental law is misunderstood. A NEPA practitioner understands its mainly process AND those technical areas in human, physical, and natural environments must create a nexus with NEPA wisdom. NEPA is as much about design, outreach, need as about impacts...to deliver truly equates to a unique expertise that should be administered to through certification.

Certifications usually shows that you are capable of performing the task relevant to that area. Environmental Consultants can have various licence depending on the demand of their task.

Si te lo puedes permitir económicamente, probablemente la mejor forma de insertarse en el sector sea cursar un máster de prestigio, que cuente con un programa de prácticas potente. Por desgracia, esto va a excluir normalmente la mayoría de máster que ofrezca tu misma universidad como continuación al grado. En cuanto a la elección de la empresa en la que hacer tus primeras prácticas, en mi opinión lo más recomendable no es fijarse en lo conocida que sea la empresa, sino determinar muy bien las tareas en las que se va a participar y su nivel de complejidad, que es lo que realmente te ayudará a progresar. También es importante fijarse en LinkedIn en el equipo con el que cuenta la empresa, pues es de quien aprenderás la profesión.

It is recommended for college graduates to work in contractor firms first before working in consultant firms. We could see more and handle more real cases at first hand when working on sites as contractors. In most cases we could manage it only when we are familiar with it.

There are several areas in Environmental science and management. For example: Hydrology, Geology, Zoology and so on. You need to have specialisation in one of them and must be an expert on your niche.

First tip - specialize! In this ever-evolving field that encompasses everything from renewable energy to waste management, specialization will become your compass. Second tip - choose a niche that aligns with your passions. In my case, my focus on circular economy and plastic waste management stems from a deep love for the ocean and its inhabitants. Ultimately, consider the unique contribution you can make. Stay away from saturated areas like climate change and make a distinctive contribution to environmental challenges for which there are currently no solutions. Discover opportunities to pioneer work and develop targeted skills. Specialized knowledge, coupled with conviction, predestines us to protect our fragile planet.

Promote yourself and create your own presence in the industry, whether it's local or global, using platforms such as LinkedIn. You never know who is watching and where things in the social circle of networking will take you and your career.

Always ask everybody you know at your company if they need help on a weekly/biweekly basis. Take on as much work as you can for as long as you can, but also learn to say no if you need to. Keep track of colleagues and clients, making sure to connect on LinkedIn. Attend workshops and networking events if you can. Always connect with others and ask questions. It is easier if you know what you want in your career, so figure out who you are and what you want.

Experience anything and everything early on in your career. You'll make yourself more marketable and might come across an area that you weren't aware of that really interests you.

Both educational paths are often paid for by employers as an investment that generates returns.

Como buena profesión técnica ligada al conocimiento, resulta esencial mantenerse actualizado constantemente en cambios legislativos, así como en nuevas guías y criterios técnicos. Para ello, existen diversos sistemas y herramientas que te pueden servir de ayuda para sistematizar este proceso. También es importante mantenerse actualizado en conocimientos técnicos, y para ello considero relevante mantener una mente abierta y tomar parte en proyectos de diferentes tipologías. Del mismo modo, es importante destinar tiempo diariamente a la autoformación, y de vez en cuando cursar algún curso de formación reglada; este último caso, solo lo recomiendo si el nivel del curso merece la pena.

Si bien es necesaria una formación en ciencias naturales o afines, no es suficiente para convertirte en consultor ambiental. Hay un factor humano que permitirá que los receptores, los clientes, hagan click con el consultor. Una persona puede especializarse muchísimo y hacerlo constantemente en las múltiples ramas ambientales que existen; sin embargo, transmitir una consultoría es algo que va más allá del conocimiento ambiental, también suman la experiencia y la personalidad.

If seeking an entry level position upon graduation from your undergraduate institution, apply for an internship with a reputable firm by your senior year. In my experience, the firm is more likely to offer recent grads a full time opportunity once receiving a relevant degree that will make the candidate an asset.

Don't be afraid to take on new challenges. It can seem daunting and you may have to operate outside of your comfort zone. But from experience I can say that what I do today in my career is not directly in alignment with my undergraduate degree. But I had great mentors along the way and was not afraid to try new things and to broaden my horizons. It led me to a 20+ long career where I enjoy what I do and has the right mix of challenges to make work fun but not overwhelming.

Sometimes the data will reveal things your client will not be happy with. For instance, when their actions resulted in potential public toxic exposures and liability. Many firms offer summer internships or temporary summer field work that are the launching pad to a permanent position. Work your hardest, ask questions and volunteer and take on any task offered.

In my opinion, report-writing & communication skills are critical. You can have all the knowledge & certifications but unless you can produce a good report, that knowledge stays with you. Producing good reports which give the reader clarity on the subject are key. Technical report-writing skills also include MS Word skills, including formatting tools. A report which is pleasing on the eye and easy to read goes a long way. Same with communication, you must know how to manage your clients & offer them the best service possible. On the topic of knowledge, along with subject expertise, it is also vital to be familiar with the local environmental legislations, as they govern the projects and dictate the content of your reports.
