How do you become an editor?

To be an editor is very simple. Write fantastic stories, have a want to manage writers, possess a deep understanding of story management, and a great overarching view of the bigger picture. That is enough if you want to be an editor. Now, to be a GOOD editor — that’s a whole other thing. A good editor is someone your writers can lean on fully. Someone who helps your writers dream bigger than the stories they write. Someone who can make a writer’s story better without making the writer feel less than. It’s about empowerment and empathy, passion and perseverance. That is what makes a good editor.

While a degree is helpful for credentials and resume-purposes, it's not going to teach you how to be an effective editor. To become an effective editor ... 1. Take a copy writing course tailored for those aiming to become professional editors. 2. Edit under a mentor or coach. 3. Familiarize yourself with all the current style guides that show the accepted usage and grammar rules. 4. Edit for free and ask for feedback.

No one makes you an editor unless you achieve certain level of competence. It's more of a managerial job than editorial job but given the role it involves, editors must be an expert of the domain he is handling. It's your hard work plus the skill to work with the management and achieve organisational goals.

I’ve found over the years that it’s a myth that you choose your niche. Quite often it’s the niche that chooses you. I graduated with a degree in political science. More than a decade later, I’m specialising in regenerative finance as a result of my diverse work experience accumulated over the years. Don’t be disheartened if you’re writing about a subject that you don’t feel particularly passionate about. If it pays the bills, chip away at it for 2 years, then move on. This is truly the most difficult thing to do, for a highly creative type of person. Many artists in a variety of fields have no idea how to market themselves, and certainly get tired of it quickly, whenever they have attempted it. They would much rather spend their time creating - or even working - than to spend it marketing themselves. Because of the difficulty with motivation, regarding self-marketing, I think that hiring someone to do it for you is probably the best idea - at least, such is the case for someone like me. I find it much easier and far more pleasurable to market someone else than to market myself. I often come up dry when trying to think of ways to market myself, but can think of a dozen ways to market others.
