How do you become a developer?

One thing I found helpful when I started my developer journey, was to pick a programming language that has a broader adoption by companies in the area where I lived, at that time was Java and I loved it from the beginning, some years later I learned other languages like Python, JavaScript, etc, but I got back to Java because I enjoyed more... So once you pick a language you can explore its features and find out why the things were built in that way for that specific programming language, if you follow your curiosity you'll learn many cool things along the way.

Pick your tool: Choose a programming language like Python, Javascript, Java etc. Learn the basics: Think of it like learning ABCs. Variables, loops, functions - master these building blocks. Get your hands dirty: Don't just read, build! Make small projects, mess them up, fix them, and learn from the bumps. Show off your stuff: Build a portfolio, like a trophy case for your code creations. Join the developer club: These folks are friendly! Hang out online, meet up, and learn from their experiences. Keep learning, keep growing: Tech is always changing, so keep exploring new things and embrace the challenges. Become a coding master! Remember, the best path is the one that makes you happy :)

Pick one for the thing you are interested in or see being able to reach your goal. Once you learn one, the basics apply to others. Don’t hold yourself up on thinking about whether that language will continue to be relevant. Getting real good in any language takes time and focus. I started powershell for work to make my life easier and it translated very well into Python and C#. I’m much faster in Powershell than I am in other languages, but that is just due to lack of focus on those other ones. It’s much easier when a goal is in mind to use those other languages.

Before starting the journey in development we must know how data is organized and retrieved, i.e. need to know the data structure. If we know the basics properly we can proceed easily. During initial stages of learning any new programming language we need to remember the errors we are facing and how we are resolving. Stick to basics, increase your ability step by step.

Choosing a programming language is not as important as learning programming; Many principles and ways of thinking is applicable accross most programming languages. When you have already learned the basics, you might also get a better idea of what direction you want to go. The next language you choose will be much easier compared to one you initial chose.

Clear Fundamentals are the building block of becoming a developer or a good coder. To achieve something the basic requirement is - to be clear about your goals and have a blueprint of it . If your fundamentals are strong you can find a way and write logic in any language.

Fundamentals are probably the most important aspect of learning any language. Once these fundamentals are clear then learning any programming language is easy. I have coded / do code in Java, Python, shell scripts. The debugging skills and basic analytical skills always help you to find your issues in the code.

Take your time to practice and master the fundamentals of programming and debugging, every other advanced concepts are built on top of these, a clear understanding of the fundamentals will make it much easier getting into more advanced topics.

In my journey as a developer, I've stumbled upon a trio of habits that have become my compass for writing better code every day. I call it the 3R approach - Refactoring, Reading, and Reviewing. Refactoring: Constantly upgrade, refine, and give my code a facelift - a digital maintenance routine for continuous improvement. Reading: Dive into open source projects. It's a two-way street - learn how to write elegant code or gain insights on what to avoid. Reviewing: Code reviews are more than bug-catching. They're where ideas collide, and brilliance is born. Discussing algorithms and exploring different approaches is the real magic. These three Rs have become my daily ritual, my secret sauce for continuous improvement.

When expanding your knowledge and skill set, it can be difficult to just sit down and "learn more". What I find best is to find something that you already like to do. If it is reading, then find a good source of information like a developer newsletter. If it is games or algorithms, try one of the many algorithm sites or even competitive sites where you can practice with different problems and also see how you stack up against others! I prefer the latter to the former because I forget that I'm learning when I'm just focused on getting the best possible solution.

After learning the fundamentals of coding, you can expand your knowledge by exploring more advanced topics and concepts, such as algorithms, data structures, design patterns, frameworks, and libraries. These are the elements that can help you create more complex, efficient, and scalable programs, and they will also expose you to different methodologies of software development. You can also join online communities, such as Stack Overflow, GitHub, or Reddit, to ask questions, share ideas, and learn from other developers.

Learn to code, practice a lot, build real projects, stay updated, and connect with other developers for guidance and collaboration.

A portfolio can be anything from a small message app to a generic CRUD application. Don't just build a portfolio just because you need to have one. Find the need/urge for it. Try to solve a simple real world problem and the scale from there. That's how you will have to motivation or interest to solve that problem.

Et j'ajoute pour ceux qui sont encore à l'école, surtout gardez vos projets de classe et comme cela a été dit, créé un portfolio pour en parler et si possible les faire tester par ceux qui visiteront votre profil. J'ai remarqué que la plupart de nos projets d'école (moi et certains camarades) disparaissent après l'évaluation ce qui est dommageable

Portfolio is very important. Doesn’t even need to be a custom site, just having an active Github is very important. Consistently pushing code and contributing on Github shows that you have a passion for development. Contributing to popular and well known projects is the next step! In my opinion, most employers don’t want to visit myname.dev. They just take a quick look at your Github to verify that you are actually coding.

The problem with freelancing as a starting point is that monone wants to pay a beginner. Worse yet, you’re competing with loads of more experienced developers already on the market. Join an open source project, take on small units of work, and build your expertise as your bandwidth allows. Build your skills and confidence. And put those projects on your resume as they are impressive. If you’re fresh out of college most regional employers will participate in hack a thons and/or hiring days - my son got his first job in the latter; my employer is BIG on the former. Learn your stuff cold. When intervening don’t be afraid to say “I don’t know, but I’ll find out”.

As you learn, start building projects to solidify your understanding and showcase your skills. Begin with simple projects like command-line tools, simple websites, or games, and gradually move towards more complex applications. Contributing to open-source projects is also an excellent way to gain practical experience and build your portfolio.

Networking is, for me, almost as important as programming itself. As you're learning, try to join a community, code with people, participate in projects, and strive to adapt to the working rhythm of others. In the professional field, many prefer a B-tier programmer who can work flawlessly and collaboratively with a team; over an A-tier developer who tends to work alone or encounters challenges when working with others. Building strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively can significantly enhance your value as a programmer in a professional matter.

If you want to up skill yourself at a fast pace, networking is the best tool, now I don't suggest spending too much time on social media but I do suggest spending time with seniors who can guide you. Showcase your work to your peers and seniors, get reviews and constructive criticism on your work. Learn your mistakes and improve on them.

Communication and learning from others is a cornerstone is becoming a good developer and skilled developer. By staying alone with edu materials you are strict to one path however different point of view and approaches can surprise and lead to more efficient solutions. Comment in article, forums, post questions - it's not a shame to ask and take other's solutions.

Find your focus whether it's frontend or backend and be consistent with what/how you're learning. Find the minimum amount of time you can commit to a day and make sure to always commit at least that much time every day. Consistency is key to learning and growing.

The best advice I can give to anyone starting out in software development is to approach new challenges with a genuine curiosity for the unknown. Early in the learning journey, it’s easy to become complacent by relying on familiar approaches to challenges. Actively seeking out opportunities to push yourself outside of your comfort zone will help you not only develop your technical skills, but will also teach you more about yourself as a critical thinker and problem solver. Understanding yourself as a developer is just as important as building technical skills when it comes to building a life and career filled with learning and growth.

Consistency is key! At the onset of your professional journey, dedicating an additional 10 to 30 minutes daily to mastering your skills can be beneficial. Although it might seem insignificant, this time investment compounds and significantly contributes over weeks and months. By maintaining this discipline, you can achieve substantial progress relative to others.

As technology constantly evolves, stagnation is a successful developer's enemy. Its not going to be easy especially for those without CS background. Stick to it. Learn from every mistake and embrace failure until the light bulb moment where everything starts to make sense. Its a marathon and not a sprint.

I am sure there are other answers that will walk you through the steps to become a developer. But i have felt that one thing that beats everything else is pure logical thinking.. Not assuming something works rather understanding how... And its not as if anyone is born with these instincts.. One has to constantly remind oneself to keep looking for the logical answers to any problem.. You can master any tool with this ideology..

Many companies have their own coding schools, bootcamps, and other paths to internships. These are the best ways to gain knowledge and be mentored at the same time. If you can get into such a program, it is worth switching the language or whatever other technology you are already learning. E.g. even if you've been studying Java and they want Golang or Javascript or whatever, just get in and learn what they're using. You are going to need fundamentals and every other kind of knowledge as well, but your first coding language is nowhere near as important as that first experience in a real company with real programmers.
