One very important takeaway is to keep an open mind and re-invent myself every day. While it is still very important to master formalia in order to create the necessary structure, the traditional way of thinking is no longer viable. Planning for years in order to get everything perfect and then execute and deliver is out of the question. As of late, I have been adopting EA dimensions, where the activities of an EA function is to create value and strategic deliverables in parallel with the ongoing develpment of these dimensions, e.g. Innovation, insights and data, strategy and so on. The trick is to stay relevant and add value. I have also noted that there is a stubborn tendency to consider Enterprise Architect an IT role. It is not.

As a Chief Architect, specify your domain and ensure it aligns with your organization's strategic objectives. Nurture a portfolio with your architectural acumen, documenting every project, problem, and innovation. Winden your network by connecting with industry pioneers, colleagues, technology suppliers, and decision-makers. Continue your education by reading technical blogs, white papers, and industry periodicals. Find an experienced architect mentor to provide guidance and offer valuable insights. Ultimately, achieving the position of Chief Architect requires long-term dedication, perseverance, and a strong reputation. By implementing these principles, one can establish a prosperous career at the top of architectural authority.

Most Chief Architects I’ve met have a strong tech background. The key to moving up is understanding the business side of things. You need to learn business architecture and to create/refresh ‘business technology strategy’ that identifies what the business needs and how tech can meet those needs. Get to know your business inside out. Talk to key stakeholders to understand their goals and challenges. As a Chief Architect, you need to be an expert in many areas and know a bit about everything else. Don’t be afraid to learn about new tech domains. I’ve found it helpful to shadow people in different business units to understand the day-to-day processes. As tech and business landscapes change, you need to keep learning and adapting.

The path to becoming a chief architect revolves around showcasing a robust history of successfully executing projects within one's domain. This involves constructing a comprehensive portfolio that not only highlights technical proficiency & innovative solutions but also underscores the tangible business value derived from architectural decisions. The chief architect is a person who isn't needed to be in depth for all, but have a wide variety of skills, to look over architecture in every domain and can review by neutral stance. To become a chief architect, the person should be interested in every key factors like technologies, methodologies, tools, solutions and so forth, and have abilities to gather architects in every domains and to communicate with them.

I think it requires a holistic approach that combines technical acumen but more importantly strong interpersonal and strategic skills. Expanding your network is crucial for several reasons: 1. Effective communication is key as a chief architect, you must convey your vision and recommendations clearly to various audiences. 3. Promote collaboration inside and outside the organisation. Become a thought leader and your share knowledge, experiences and insights with the wider community, building your credibility and visibility in the market.

In my view, a chief architect should possess a strong educational background in computer science or related fields, accompanied by relevant certifications. Education is a continuous process, underscoring the importance of staying updated on the latest trends, technologies, and practices within one's domain and the broader industry. The suggestion to broaden one's perspective by learning about other domains and disciplines is valid, as it fosters a more holistic understanding of the business landscape. The recommended methods for ongoing education, including courses, reading, videos, podcasts, webinars, and workshops, provide a comprehensive approach to remain knowledgeable and adaptable in the dynamic field of technology and architecture.

It’s important to have a growth mindset in the journey toward becoming a successful chief architect. A growth mindset, as opposed to a fixed mindset, is the belief that abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication and hard work. Continuing to earn the latest certifications related to Enterprise & Business Architecture, e.g. TOGAF 10, along with other domains that impact the business environment such as learning agile and how this can impact the way architecture is completed. Outside of the domain education, pursuing an advanced degree like a Masters or PhD would be beneficial to build further credibility. Finally, invest in developing soft skills such as communication, negotiation, and leadership.

One of the fundamental and most critical roles of chief architect is to develop and implement policy framework and rules to guide design, development, implementation, and integration of applications in a digital landscape. This is very vital to drive the applications up the maturity curve. These policies and guidelines will allow solution designers to operate within tangible rule set, thus making it easy to decide what's allowed and what's not, which in turn ensures that the design is rigorous and adheres to long term digital goals.

To become a Chief Architect, follow these steps: 1. Education: Obtain a bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field. Consider an advanced degree for a deeper understanding of business and technology. 2. Gain Experience: Start in technical roles (like software developer or network administrator), advancing to senior positions where you manage projects and strategies. 3. "Chief Architect" is not a consistently defined position in organizations. That being said - I draw a distinction between "chief" vs "principal/lead". "Principal/lead" are significant technology focused positions but are not "technical" positions. The "chief" position is focused on alignment and value realization in developing the technology strategy in support of the business vision and strategy. So - lot's of networking, relationship building, negotiating, guiding and educating.
