How do you become a business system analyst?

I became a business analyst by accident. I said yes to every task. Update the configuration with BOM changes? Investigate variance? Write a new work instruction? Make a PPT for sales? Sure! I volunteered to solve problems. “Not my job” “someone needs to fix this”, never crossed my mind. I had QMS responsibilities to teach me the basics of change management and I took a formal process mapping course at BCIT. I dove into the ERP and PLM systems to learn how they did everything. I never stuck to my job description and I insisted on understanding every procedure and its connections. Most importantly, I never accepted bandaids and work arounds for long. I eventually got a bachelors but it was the experience and mindset that made me an analyst.

We are all “business-systems” analysts because we analyze “business-systems.” Workflows, people, processes and the machines (technologies) in which we use them are parts of business-systems. That’s what you do BAs you analyze the behaviours and characteristics of business-systems at many levels of applicability through context, perspective and depth from the largest concepts like value and purpose to the processes and rules all the way down to the tuples of data and lines of code (in some cases). And of course you facilitate, model, specify, and communicate your analysis. At least that my point of view. ??

I had the chance to work in different departments (customer service, sales, operations etc.) and in foreign agencies. This helped me a lot to have the possibility to see things from several point of view and to have deep knowledge of the entire business in our group of companies. We work with a variety of people and aspects of business and may not always have team members who communicate their business needs/processes well. The role of BSA is changing and evolving. The traditional BSA role is associated with a system, business domain and process knowledge. In many cases that is also title used for a data analyst. Many in the BSAs role start on either business side or technical side and evolve into BSAs by building techno-functional skills. This mostly comes with hands on experience over the years and continuous learning. Degree is not always a requirement, IMO.
