I always term the houseperson as a heartbeat of the department. A banquet houseperson is the guy who keeps the department alive! From lighting up the space to setting it up to be used by guests to helping guests to have a great event at your place! So as far as duties and responsibilities are concerned, the scope of work cant be defined in a drafted and defined manner here

As a banquet house person, you must have excellent work ethic and the ability to work well unsupervised. You are often left to clean/set/flip a room when the manager/supervisor is otherwise occupied. Common sense is vital, think about everything that might be needed. For example, you have a lunch service with soup, you better make sure there are soup spoons, bowls and crackers on the buffet. Flexibility with schedule - able to work late nights / early mornings is very important, or don’t be surprised if you don’t get many shifts. You should also have enough confidence to speak to guests, even if only to get contact information and pass along to manager.

For me, I have looked for driven problem solvers for this position. Banquet housepersons need to be able to work under pressure and be able to balance multiple tasks and prioritize efficiently. The ability to communicate well is also key in this position as you tend to work with various departments.

Banquet jobs are generally posted online and often, hotels have open recruitment days. These days are great opportunities because a lot of properties will offer you a position right on the spot if you are the right person for the job. Remember to show your eagerness to work hard, be flexible and most of all you willingness to learn new skills.

During your training, take notes & pictures. During events, keep yourself busy - you have 30 minutes before lunch -polish cutlery, do rollups, put away dishes from morning break. If your venue has multiple outlets (banquets, restaurant, room service etc) always be on the lookout for your inventory. Common sense goes a long way in banquets. When reading BEO or setup requirements don’t be afraid to ask for clarification when first starting out. Your manager/trainer would much rather take 5 minutes to show you how to set the buffet table for the 2nd time than have to redo it the next morning.

Engage to different groups of people. You can enhance how to be productive during down times. Like side duties.Being a Banquet server is fun and enjoyable job i ever had.

One of the things to consider here is the attitude of the person. A never say never person who is a great team player is the go to guy we all need for this position as the professional boundaries are not defined in this role.
