How do you become an admissions counselor?

As a former Admissions Counsellor with a major university in Philadelphia, and coming to the job directlly after being honorably discharged from the USAF, I found these attributes most important: First, understanding the college and university you were to work for. Being an "alum" can help, but truly understanding what the education can lead to. Understand the job.. is it a "recruiting and sales" job or is it matching the desired student profiles to the applicant profile. There can be a big difference. Next, be skilled in getting to know people. This is first asking the right questions, but equally important or possibly more so.. the ability to listen and be clear on the message you are hearing. Not enouigh room for more.

Ask your supervisor for stretch assignments in your area of interest. Do you want to get into social media and marketing? Ask to help on a project or to sit in on a meeting. You also have a wealth of opportunities across the organization. Many colleges host events and speakers. And while many probably don't feature "Admissions topics," they can give you insight into campus and build up your knowledge on other areas. Engaging across the organization is also a great way to grow your knowledge of the organization to better serve the students you're recruiting!
