I started and built a successful 3D/AM sales and service company, and based on my experience, to become a 3D Printing Engineer one must start with the basics. Knowledge of CAD/CAM software coupled with the experience of running 3D printers. This kind of training is readily available today in most Universities and Community Colleges. Software has become a lot easier to learn and the same stands for 3D printing tools. Once one learns the basics, one can seek employment in the industry in an entry level position and get some real life experience. From there one can advance into higher levels of responsibility depending on ones aptitude, dedication and drive. The AM industry is here to stay and will continually grow for decades.

While experience is king, there are some things you can study in school to help make you a more effective 3D printing engineer. For me, I found these skills in a mechanical engineering degree with emphasis in mechanical design, robotics, and coding. Experiences found in electrical and manufacturing engineering would be helpful as well though! From my experience, I believe no specific background is needed for 3D printing. I personally met a person with a Diploma degree only with more than 10 years of experience in 3D printing. The person's passion to 3D printing is what made them experts in 3D printing. A background in Mechanical, Electrical, or Materials engineering will be very beneficial to grasp the concept of AM easily and focus in developing the technology more, this will also be beneficial in Research and Development of new materials/technologies. Becoming a 3D bioprinting engineer demands an interdisciplinary education, blending biology and bioengineering. Specialized programs are limited, but hands-on research experiences are crucial. To my knowledge, you do not need any specific education/degree to become a 3-D printing expert. From my experience, during my PhD I had a 3-D printer in my lab and my colleagues use to work on it, and out of interest I started learning and discussing the 3-D printing platform and assisted them during their assays/experiments. Following this, I applied for an exchange program in Japan to learn more about the process of 3D- printing ( related to my subject of interest which is organ printing) and I spent 3 months with experts in this field to gain knowledge around this and used it to apply in my field of interest. According to me if you have an interest and know where and how to apply the technology you can acquire the skill anytime.

It absoulutely helps if you some basic understanding of material technology. 3D-printing exhibts of course new possibilties to construct but there is also a need for new materials tailored for this processes which differ from conventional manufacturing methods.

For 3D printing not only you need to have hard as well as soft skills . Hard skills such as computer aided design or 3D modelling , design thinking , ergonomic design skill and soft skills such as communication , clearity of ideas regaring products that you want to make , collaboration with other people etc . These are the minimum that you need to have . You need to stay up to date with several articles and 3D prinitng community on various platform to find out what's new with this growing technology .
A good differentiation in terms of skills is deciding if you want to learn about 3D printing or 3D printers. The difference is with learning 3D printers you get to tinker with 3D printers and fixing/debugging them to achieve the goal of a well calibrated 3D prints. This will help also with the 3D design and printing process to achieve making a good prototype/product. However it is time consuming and needs patience. 3D printing can be learned without know so much about 3D printers f you’re using expensive commercial 3D printers or even consumer based printers like Bambulab they basically tell you exactly what to do and needs very minimal intervention or hardware upgrades/calibration.

Firstly there is a large presence of 3D printing community on youtube , there are various channels which you can follow to start with your first print and to get updated with the technology subsequently . secondly you can download cad models from various websites such as grabcad , thingiverse , etsy etc. You can learn various and best printing parameters from various articles present online . lastly participate in various compitition and hackathons nationaly and internationally to refine your designs and gain a compititive experience and to stand out from others .
You can gain experience by taking up projects. Model objects you see around and try printing them. Once they work that is experience. You can also get free stl files to learn with.
If you work for a company that uses 3D printing then get involved in some projects. Every project and every part requires a new way of looking at the problem and the more projects you work on, the better you will get. If your company doesn't use 3D printing or you're not employed, then get a hold of a printer and some CAD software and get tinkering. Reading articles, speaking to enthusiasts or industry experts, and taking courses will only take you so far. Application through trial and error will help iron out the fine print details to level up your skills far beyond what theory alone ever will.
Experience is the sum of all mistakes one makes. If there is a serious contact to an AM expert, maybe he/she tells important errors and failures of their own, depending on the AM technology. Unfortunately, literature only tells success storys and suggests everything was simple and easy.

3d printing is a new process for a lot of manufacturing engineers but it's not difficult to learn and understand and although there is flexibility in the manufacturing process, it comes at a cost with rigidity of the system.
Not a formal "3D Printer Engineer," here's my advice if you're not one either. My background in Industrial Design offers a creative edge in fabrication. Education is vital, but it's not all about degrees—immerse yourself in 3D printing projects. Hone skills in CAD and materials science, alongside other digital fabrication tools.
