Actually I disagree with the statement "before you start looking for IT vendors" I would bet you already have them. There is no perfect time, so you have to start mid-stream. You can not wait to be perfect you need to manage immediately and work to make it better.

Risk management. Align them with your security policies, manage their connections and regularly check for compliance. They are an extension of your network, treat them as such. We see too many hacks from third parties.
