I disagree that there is a rivalry here between simplicity and functionality. The author is correct that the UAV design needs to be paired to the requirements, but much of the complexity has come from the designers, not the requirements. I you need something that hovers, only has to be on station for 30min or less and the payload is directional and falls somewhere in the IR/Thermal to EO range of payloads, a multi rotor design becomes predominant. If you need long loiter times, RF payloads, or long standoff, fixed wing becomes the predominant choice. Ease of use is usually a software thing with the controller/GUI or the flight computer. I tend to find that simplicity and functionality complement each other rather than rival each other.

This to me is the most critical part of the design input (User Requirements/User feedback). It is also the part that gets most of us engineers in the most trouble. User inputs don't always translate to clear requirements, so if I think that short duration flights mean under 15min and the user thinks short duration flights are less than 3 hours, obviously there will need to be some adjustments made. Clear communication on both the engineer and the users is paramount to the success of a project.

This is well said. I lean more towards simplicity, since I was once on the user end of things as a tactical UAV operator. Whenever I saw lots of advanced features, generally speaking 1/2 to 3/4 of them work on the bench and in test environments, but not in the real world. The simpler the tool was the more reliable it tended to be.
