To be a cost leader, you have to position your business uniquely in order to achieve a cost position that is structurally lower than for your competitor. On the other hand, being “differentiated” does not mean you are just different. You are a differentiator only if you are providing additional values in a way that compels customers to pay a meaningfully different price based on value. Any time you face competition, it is not realistic to have both strategies at the same time. You have to choose one or the other. Regardless of which strategy you play, you have to be cost effective and also have clarity on what value you are providing to your customer.
