In my experience I have found that it’s always best to plan ahead . What I mean by this if you know that you’re doing motion heavy videography, plan ahead by videoing further out and less zoomed in. This makes you less shaky and provides you the freedom to use stabilization in post which zooms in to reduce shake.

One of the biggest enemies of stabilization is motion blur. Even if you manage to stabilize the shot, if there's a noticeable amount of motion blur from frame to frame, that will be immediately noticeable in the stabilized shot. In which case, you've fixed one problem while creating a new one. Noise is another problematic issue, especially if you're using an optical flow based stabilizer. You'll often get large areas of weird, blobby warping motion because the optical flow algorithms cannot predict the motion of the rapidly changing pixels in those areas. It's a good idea to use a good denoising filter before the stabilizer (not after!) to mitigate artifacts like this.

Optical-flow based stabilization is not the be-all, end-all of stabilization options. Don't give up just because the "Warp Stabilizer" in Premiere yields goofy results. Sometimes an old-school, Transform-based stabilization can give you better results than space-age, motion estimated algorithms can. Also, experiment with surgically constraining the stabilization to only a single axis, rather than stabilizing Scale, Rotation and Position all at the same time. You'll often find, for example, that only stabilizing Position & Scale, and excluding Rotation can yield a more natural result than attempting to do all 3 axes at once.
