I have found that to being R&D it starts with fundamentals. I design genomics-based assays for clinical diagnostics. 1. Think about the product first and foremost: what are the product requirements? This includes cost per sample, how will it address market need, who and how will patients, doctors pay for this product? How can we reach and help as many people as possible? How many competitors are in the space? What would make the new product idea better than the rest? 2. What are the key experiments need to show the product idea is feasible? 3. Put a plan forward, demonstrate value experimentally, make adjustments, decide if it is strong enough to move ahead.

2 Set the objectives

Setting metrics, QC guidelines, controls, sample pass/fail etc can be determined empirically through the feasibility + plan. Sometimes it requires figuring out what needs to be measured and what exactly determines quality. Everything must fit with original product requirements. It is possible some compromises can be made on requirements depending on data.
