Teaching grammar and mechanics does NOT equip students to “write well.” It helps them write with clarity, and it helps them look professional. However, teaching grammar and mechanics in a vacuum is incredibly difficult and misguided. Grammar and mechanics should be thought within more extensive writing curriculum. Students need to see why clarity is important. They need to struggle with the writing process a little. Then short grammar and mechanics lessons will mean more. They will also retain the lessons better.

It's valuable to consider that grammar, as a part of language, evolves over time. A grammar style can be different from what you learned as correct usage without necessarily being "wrong." The way language is used will be different between people of different cultural backgrounds, identities, and generations. Related to this, grammar may evolve to fill in gaps where a language hadn't been designed to represent necessary concepts. The singular "they," for example, may feel odd to a lot of people (even though it has precedent going back to 1375). However, it fills in a necessary gap, allowing us to refer to a singular person either without specifying gender or where the person's gender doesn't fit into the previously-established binary.
