I have used the flipped classroom approach for over 30 years. I teach accounting and the only way to learn accounting is to do accounting. When I first started, I had the students read the text prior to class, and we worked on problems in class. Sometimes I would demo the problems; sometimes, I would have students work together in groups and then we would review it. Today, I have the students do preliminary work in homework management systems that have them do interactive questions while skimming the book. Students who do the necessary work outside of class get to a higher level of learning than using a lecture model. Students who do not do the required work outside of class inevitably fall behind in the classroom.
