In my experience, the more transparent we are with our teams, the easier it is to build rapport. As a manager, when I miss the mark on something I try to own it right away. Hopefully this helps my team to feel comfortable communicating when they drop the ball or are struggling. I also ask for help and invite their input. Something as simple as “Hey my day is full! If you have anything you’re waiting for me on, can you ping me the project number?” Also, showing an appropriate amount of investment in each others work and personal lives make a world of difference - That could mean following up on a detail a team member has shared about their weekend after the fact or asking how an important meeting went.
