This is why research is very important and too on many fronts. Talk to the school and the alumni and decide whether you belong there. Its also important to know yourself well. What are your subjects of interest? How do you learn best? Do you do better in a large class or a small class size? are some questions to answer.

In the world of data, its often said "when a mom says its her child - its the truth; when a dad says its his child - its a belief". This in simple terms mean one needs to know which data is reliable and action-worthy. Many applicants get carried away by propaganda (either good or bad), social influencers, rankings (without understanding the bias and the methodology), and the data (stats/visuals). While choosing the university, the applicant needs to only trust the data that's from the source and be smart to remove the clutter.

Don’t just apply to the big-name schools because they sound impressive and dig deeper. Start by asking yourself what you truly want out of a program. Is it a specific curriculum, a renowned faculty, or a particular career outcome? Once you’ve got that figured out, dive into research. Compare programs not just on their reputation, but on how well they align with your goals and strengths. A balanced list is key, aim for a mix of reach, target and safety schools. It’s better to apply to fewer schools that genuinely fit your aspirations than to spread yourself too thin.

Follow the instructions - especially in not using templates or AI generated responses provided by admissions agents. Universities of repute have invested on software that help them identify responses that are either built using a template or using AI. A genuine applicant also keeps track of character count, line count, line spacing, margins, etc.

Your essay is your chance to stand out in a sea of applicants, so make it count. Think of it as a conversation with the admissions committee, this is your moment to show them who you are beyond your grades and test scores. Start by being honest about your journey, what drives you, what challenges you’ve overcome and why this program is the perfect next step for you. Don’t just rehash your resume, instead use your essay to connect the dots between your experiences and your goals. Create each essay to the specific program, demonstrating that you’ve done your homework and understand what they’re looking for.

"If my essay response is beyond 500 words, would this disqualify my application?" This is a frequently asked question I receive from applicants. My answer is, try staying within the perimeters given. Be as descriptive, but to the point as possible. If your statement prompts more than the perimeters given, speak with your admissions advisor as they may be are privy to the guideline exceptions available based of a case by case circumstance.

In my experience in rendering admission decisions and extending acceptance offers is highly tied to the applicants recommendations. Can the recommender speak beyond the applicants character? Would he or she hire their current or previous employee or student? How does the recommender speak to the applicants leadership, teamwork, teachability, responsiveness, talents, competencies, etc? Has the recommender worked alongside the applicant long enough to determine areas of improvement? Would he or she recommend the applicant to our program with enthusiasm? Thorough and honest feedback is extremely necessary for educators to make an informed decision on whether or not the applicant is a good fit for the program in which they desire.

Strong recommendations can be the tipping point for your application, so choose your recommenders wisely. Go for people who truly know your work ethic, skills, and potential, those who’ve seen you in action and can vouch for your growth. When you ask for a recommendation, do it early and give your recommenders plenty of time to craft something thoughtful. Provide them with specific examples of your work and remind them of any key projects or achievements, they might not remember every detail. A personalized recommendation that highlights your strengths and aligns with your application can really set you apart. And don’t forget to express your gratitude, thank them for their time and effort.

It's imperative for prospective students to know their why, their end goal, have a plan to achieve that goal and how to sustain that goal. I commonly ask prospective students who or what is your inspiration? Why this specific program? Do you have the support of your family, employer, or friend to push to the end? How you plan to balance work and life with the amount of time needed for your specific program? How do you plan on funding your education? Possessing this knowledge beforehand as helps admissions learn more about you, helps determine if the degree you're seeking is a good fit or if there are other areas of opportunity suitable for you.

Irrespective of which program one is applying to - BS, MS (few programs), MBA, or Ph.D, applicants should be better prepared for interviews - on-the-spot interviews (for e.g. KIRA); prep-record-upload; live online; and/or live off-line. If they are technical interviews (mostly in the case of MS or Ph. D), not only the admissions but also the value of assistantship largely depend on one's understanding of the subject. Most of the interviews for BS or MBA is generally non-technical and hence one needs to a better understanding of one's goals, abilities, contributions, aspirations, traits, etc. The applicant should be ready to address questions like 'what do you do for fun' or 'given a fully paid one-month vac, what would you do'.

Preparation is everything. Start by revisiting your application materials, you should be ready to discuss anything you’ve mentioned, from your academic interests to your personal achievements. Research the program thoroughly so you can articulate why it’s the right fit for you and what you can bring to the table. Practice answering common interview questions, but also be prepared to think on your feet. First impressions count, set up a quiet, professional environment, dress the part and test your tech to avoid any glitches. During the interview, be yourself. At the outset, please do start with career goals and what's that you would like to achieve over the next 15 - 20 years. When such a perspective is added, the applicant's choice of program more often than not widens/changes altogether. Based on this outcome, the applicant should choose the program and then the university. It should never be the other way round.
