In my experience, this is done for equipment that has requirements that are monitored by outside agencies. For example, fire and safety. However, for general equipment, there is still much work to be done to convince owners of the advantages of preventative maintenance. Some tend to follow the saying: 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it.'

I will add here the degree of effect of the failure equipment down the road in the process. Let’s take an example of pump supplying oxygen to many patients. How many lives can be saved by keeping that particular pump alive all the time

There are a few things to consider within the context of “Know your Equipment”: 1. Provide your team with fundamental technical training modules that cover the basic and general theory of operation that can be applied to all pumps and fans regardless of the make and model. 2. Provide your team with technical training that specifically relate to the pumps and fans that are located on-site. Ensure this includes training on both preventative and corrective maintenance. 3. Review all the test equipment and ensure that they are calibrated correctly and that you generate the relevant documentations to support. The main objective of a PM program is to expose potential issues and create systems to effectively resolve the root causes.

A practice that helps improve the work flow is to have all the relevant documents and literature available on a cloud. All personnel should have access to the documents and be encouraged to continuously review them. I would also place an emphasis on understanding the industry standards. Deeply understanding the requirements and standards enforced by regulatory bodies is key to creating a robust PM workflow. For example, in the UK, our work in managing medical devices is managed by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency. We encourage our engineers to study their regularly updated document: “Managing Medical Devices”. A very useful document highlighting the key stages in a medical device’s lifecycle .
