It's like with everything, really - if you are not sure where you want to get to, it will be hard to choose the best way to get there! Before you look for a learning solution, you should be clear on which skill(s) you're looking to develop or the technical area where you want to expand your knowledge. This way, you can judge if the solution presented to you is suitable for your needs and you will also be able to measure if the result obtained was what you were expecting. The other important element to consider is the time you have to dedicate to your learning and find a suitable solution. Nothing worse than to start something you can't finish!

The next step is to check the source of the career learning resource. Who created it and what are their credentials, qualifications, and reputation? Even if done as part of course promotion work, the way the creator talks, their body language, and the points they raise will give you an idea of their intentions, expertise, and passion. Then do a more fact based check on their credentials - google their name, check them out on LinkedIn, see their Tweets.

I always check out the course name on YouTube. Chances are, somebody would have uploaded reviews of the course or interviews with the course creator online. Always check for multiple reviews and never settle for less than 10 when you order a course.

Most courses will offer a 30 day refund window. When you buy a course, try to skim through the entire content in the first pass (2 days). Don't bother taking extensive notes at this stage. Try to get an overall feel of what all the course will provide. If you see even one idea/lesson/technique that will improve your career, it's worth it. Next go through the course slide by slide, each time thinking through how you can apply it to your career. Be an active learner.

The final step is to review and reflect on the career learning resource after you have completed it. How did it match your purpose and goals?
