Multimodal pedagogy helps students to hone their strengths in analyzing texts. While teaching a food politics course, I created opportunities for students to practice multimodal literacy. The curriculum included books and articles, such as Fast Food Nation and “The Pleasures of Eating” by Wendell Berry. Students also wrote about modern and vintage food advertisements and watched videos by Joel Salatin. By looking at these different texts, students gained experience in comparing different modes and making arguments about them. In many cases, this improved their engagement in the class and their writing.

This will also help design a fair, consistent rubric.
