How do you assess and adjust the level of germane cognitive load in your training sessions?
Cognitive load theory (CLT) is a framework that explains how our working memory processes and stores information. According to CLT, there are three types of cognitive load: intrinsic, extraneous, and germane. Intrinsic load is the inherent difficulty of the content, extraneous load is the unnecessary distraction or confusion caused by the presentation, and germane load is the productive effort that leads to deeper learning and schema formation. As a training facilitator, you want to minimize intrinsic and extraneous load and maximize germane load in your sessions. But how do you assess and adjust the level of germane load for your learners? Here are some tips to help you do that.
