How do you approach product design?

The first step would be to understand what problem we are trying to solve for our customers. Then we jump into the number of clicks it’s going to reduce for our customer. Post that we analyse the current design and how’s its connection with the customer is. Once we get an understanding of all these aspects we can start the design work with a bag full of data points serving as a pathway.

While we were designing a payment wallet for a huge platform, we met all sorts of prospective customers and merchants to understand their pain-points. We met Kirana shop owners, auto and taxi drivers, restaurant owners, bus conductors and so on. On the other hand, we met customers of these merchants. The insights that we gathered were worth more than what was available in the surveys and reports that top consultants had provided us. So, it is best to connect with your customers and understand the real pain points before starting the product design.

The priority would be understanding the user. Creating an emphasis in user needs and what their pain point is. What is their problem? Why is it a problem? What are the pain points of the user? Then set specific set of design objectives and start the ideation process and brainstorm.

Prioritize Based on Impact: Assess the significance of user feedback and data analytics findings in achieving your product goals. Prioritize changes that align with your strategic objectives. Iterate and Test: Implement changes based on insights from both sources and continuously test their impact. Monitor user feedback and analytics after changes to refine your approach.

With user research we can understand problem statement in much deeper level. Listen to the consumer but don't follow them. If Apple followed their users at their start, Apple must built a heavy phone with much level features. Problem statement states gap in the market or a product. Which can be fulfilled within the solution provided by high level designs.

As a rule, two groups are created for its implementation. The first group includes people who generate ideas to solve the problem. The second group consists of a “commission” that deals with the processing of the proposed ideas. Brainstorming consists of three phases: 1] Definition of the problem. In particular, you must announce the problem (in this case, the need to create the “right” product design) and select participants for both teams. 2] Idea generation. This stage involves the most creative approach. Participants of the brainstorming voice every idea they can imagine, however crazy it may sound. 3] Selection of the most viable ideas among proposed. In this step, appreciation and criticism are welcome.

In the ideation phase, it's vital to create an environment where creativity thrives. Utilize brainstorming and sketching, aiming for a multitude of ideas without initial judgment. Take, for example, Airbnb's ideation process for their 'Experiences' feature. They brought together a diverse group, including designers, engineers, and actual users, to brainstorm. This diversity led to a wide range of ideas, from cultural tours to cooking classes, each enriching the concept. Quick prototyping and user feedback then helped refine these ideas into what became a successful, user-centric feature. This inclusive approach, blending diverse perspectives and rapid prototyping, is essential for generating effective, innovative solutions.

Before generating ideas, there is one more step. - Study Current/available solutions. How your target customers currently face with their needs and problem? Your first competitor is the solution which they are currently using. Study it carefully to find some points which you can improve. Its a good step which can help your ideation process...

This is the exploration stage, where every idea is welcome. - Use techniques like mind mapping, role-playing, and "what if?" scenarios to generate a diverse range of solutions. - Build quick and dirty prototypes to test and refine your ideas. Don't worry about perfection; focus on getting your ideas out there and seeing how they interact with the problem. - Diverse perspectives can spark unexpected solutions and lead to unexpected breakthroughs. The goal is to generate as many possibilities as possible at this stage. Quantity breeds quality, and the most innovative ideas often emerge from the most unexpected places.

one key enabler is the liberation of creativity in the idea finding phase. A creative athmosphere, where everybody wants to speaks and happily builds on the idea of others. Going wide and wild! Later suitable filters are applied to identify the good, teh bad and the ungly ones. In that process the tean walks from input to insight, from insight to foresight, from idea to plan.

Currently, we're evaluating and prioritizing our ideas by assessing their value, feasibility, and user appeal. Alongside this, we're validating our assumptions and hypotheses through user engagement, employing methods like user testing, A/B testing, and analyzing user data. To evaluate & prioritize effectively, it's crucial to do it within the context of the journey/behavors you're targeting. Always prioritize the OUTCOMES we want to achieve, then figure out the tasks we need to make that a reality ??
