How do you apply the DMAIC cycle to improve a process using QFD and Lean tools?

Combining the DMAIC cycle with QFD and Lean tools creates a strong system for improving processes. Begin by using QFD to understand what customers want, making sure their needs guide the project. During the Measure phase, use Lean metrics to find gaps in performance and tools like value stream mapping to spot inefficiencies. In the Improve phase, put in place solutions that meet customer needs and simplify processes. Lastly, in the Control phase, set up metrics and dashboards to keep track of performance, encouraging a mindset of continuous improvement. This comprehensive method boosts efficiency and improves customer satisfaction, turning challenges into opportunities for strategic growth.

Integrating customer needs into our processes has been transformative. We use QFD mindset to start with the Voice of the Customer (VOC), understanding their true desires and translating these into Critical Customer Requirements (CCR). These become measurable Critical to Quality (CTQ) attributes, controlled by Critical to Process (CTP) parameters to ensure consistent quality while having the Voice of the Business (VOB) always in mind. By also incorporating Kano Analysis, we categorize these customer needs into basic, performance, and delight factors, allowing us to prioritize improvements that not only meet but exceed customer expectations. This holistic approach drives satisfaction, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.

It opens a channel of communication that leads to build good understanding of what the customer is looking for in a product or porcess. It helps in the continuous improvement journey. Better product/process means better customer's satisfaction that will lead for business success and growth.

Utilize tools like data collection plans, check sheets, histograms, Pareto charts, and process capability analysis. Use QFD to compare process/product features with customer requirements and competitive benchmarks.

The fourth phase of DMAIC is Improve. Here, you generate, select, test, and implement solutions to address root causes. Use tools like brainstorming, affinity diagrams, matrix diagrams, pilot studies, and FMEA, alongside Lean principles to eliminate waste and optimize value.

The fifth DMAIC phase is Control. It involves monitoring, evaluating, and sustaining improvements using tools like control charts, SPC, control plans, and audits. Ensure continuous improvement and customer satisfaction with QFD and Lean principles.

In a SATCOM project, our goal was to improve satellite uptime. Using QFD, we translated customer expectations into technical requirements. Customers prioritised uninterrupted communication during peak hours, so we focused on factors such as signal redundancy & power management. By applying the QFD matrix, we ranked these technical parameters based on their impact on uptime. This helped us identify where improvements would have the most significant effect. QFD provided a structured way to link critical customer needs directly to our technical improvement strategy, ensuring that our process enhancements were focused on what mattered most to the client.
