1 Agile vs. Iterative

Agile is iterative, but not all iterative approaches are agile. An agile way of working involves users and business representatives working with the team regularly, and releases in smaller increments more often. When agile is done well, the change management becomes a more natural part of the process and easier due to the early and continuous involvement of users and user representatives.

2 Change management frameworks

Change management frameworks are tools that help you plan, execute, and monitor change initiatives, from defining the vision and scope, to engaging and communicating with stakeholders, to measuring and sustaining the outcomes. There are many change management frameworks available, but some of them are more compatible with agile and iterative approaches than others. For example, ADKAR is a goal-oriented framework that focuses on the individual aspects of change, such as awareness, desire, knowledge, ability, and reinforcement. It can be aligned with agile and iterative methods by applying it to each iteration, and by using feedback and coaching to support the change adoption. Another example is Kotter's 8-Step Process, which is a strategic framework that guides the organizational aspects of change, such as creating a sense of urgency, forming a coalition, generating quick wins, and anchoring the change. It can be adapted to agile and iterative methods by using short-term goals, cross-functional teams, frequent communication, and continuous learning.

3 Change implementation techniques

Change implementation techniques are practices that help you deliver change effectively and efficiently using agile and iterative methods. Scrum, Kanban, user stories, and minimum viable product (MVP) are some of the common techniques. Scrum organizes work into sprints, providing a clear vision and a feedback-driven process. Kanban visualizes work using a board with columns representing different stages of the workflow, optimizing the flow of value and reducing lead time. User stories capture the requirements of the change from the perspective of the end user, focusing on user needs. The above are lean and agile techniques and methods, but we must go deeper into people change when we talk about "Change Management" and "Change Implementation". People change is about preparing the impacted people for the change, and this can be as small as a additional choice on a screen. Involving key users in the change implementation and having them help with a plan to communicate and prepare others for the change is critical. Using agile to implement small value increments can help make the changes smaller and gather feedback along the way so that future changes are welcomed!

Agile and iterative approaches can bring many benefits to change management and implementation, such as increased customer satisfaction, improved stakeholder engagement, enhanced team performance, reduced waste and cost, and higher adaptability and resilience.
