How do you align your prototypes with the learning objectives and outcomes for ILT?

The issue I see with these surveys is they ask questions as if all ILT is done the same. In my field (telecom) we develop technical training for products based on software rev levels. So when the software for a product is upgraded, I may be required to write a new release of the training (depending on how much content has changed) but I have not had to do any "rapid prototyping" for any reason. It would be helpful if the training community would start being specific about these topics instead of generalizing as (for example), Human Resource (people skills) analysis and design can be very different than Technical Training ILT, especially during analysis and design.

I have been using a technique called rapid prototyping, also known as the Stanford Design Thinking method, to quickly develop and refine my ideas. With this method, I am able to iterate on my ideas based on feedback from stakeholders. I start by socializing my idea with others, and then use the feedback to refine and improve it before moving on to the next iteration. This process allows me to develop and refine my ideas quickly and efficiently.

The Successive Approximation Model (SAM) is an iterative instructional design approach consisting of three phases: prepare, design, and develop. In each phase, prototypes of an Instructor-Led Training (ILT) course are created and evaluated based on learning objectives and outcomes. SAM is a flexible model that accommodates frequent changes and feedback, making it suitable for complex and dynamic projects. SAM's iterative nature ensures the course continually improves, resulting in an effective, engaging course that meets the needs of the learners.

To create effective Instructor-Led Training (ILT) courses, it's crucial to write clear and measurable learning objectives and outcomes. I can do this by identifying specific, measurable, and achievable goals for the course. Then, I need to create a list of learning objectives that are aligned with the goals and focused on a single outcome. To measure the learner's progress, I need to create specific and measurable outcomes that indicate how well they have mastered each objective. Using action verbs like "describe," "explain," and "demonstrate" will help me create focused objectives and outcomes. Finally, I must ensure that the objectives and outcomes are achievable within the timeframe of the course to keep learners motivated and confident.

The design phase is where I generate and select ideas for my Instructor-Led Training (ILT) course. I can use different techniques such as brainstorming, mind mapping, storyboarding, or sketching to create low-fidelity prototypes. These prototypes show the main elements, features, and interactions of my course in a simple and rough way. To create low-fidelity prototypes, I can use paper, whiteboards, sticky notes, or digital tools. By using these techniques, I can quickly create and iterate on different ideas and select the best ones for my ILT course.

I transform my low-fidelity prototypes into high-fidelity prototypes. These prototypes are more detailed and realistic versions of my Instructor-Led Training (ILT) course that include actual content, graphics, audio, video, layout, and navigation. To create high-fidelity prototypes, I can use authoring tools, presentation software, or web platforms. I can also incorporate interactivity, feedback, and assessment into these prototypes. The high-fidelity prototypes provide a more accurate representation of the final product and allow me to identify any potential issues early in the design process. By taking the time to create high-fidelity prototypes, I can ensure that my ILT course is engaging, effective, and meets the needs of my learners.

The evaluation phase is critical to the success of my Instructor-Led Training (ILT) course. Here, I test and refine my prototypes using methods like usability testing, expert review, or learner feedback to collect data. To measure the quality and impact of my prototypes, I use criteria such as functionality, usability, engagement, relevance, and effectiveness. Tools like checklists, rubrics, or surveys help me analyze the data and identify areas for improvement. Evaluating my prototypes helps me ensure that my ILT course is effective and engaging while meeting the needs of my learners. Identifying potential issues early in the process helps me address them before finalizing the course.
