If it's high, you might increase your rates. Be flexible. If the market slows down, you may need to lower your rates temporarily to attract more clients. Communicate with your existing clients about any rate adjustments and be transparent about the reasons behind them. By staying aware of market changes and being adaptable, you can ensure your copywriting rates stay competitive and fair.

After knowing your worth - You should also know your competition. Competitive rates apply but... You should also consider the value that you bring to the table and go +1 on it. +1 means you provide an extra service so that you don't just satisfy but also retain your clients and earn goodwill

Your value it's what you share to your client and makes all difference. Value it's not all about money but how precious it's your work and how with it you can help the companies grow. So be honest about this since the first time.

Sharing testimonials and portfolio are probably the best ways to communicate value. They showcase how successful you've been in the past, allowing your client to make their own decision. If you can get someone else to sell you to themselves, you've got the winning formula.

After working in writing for 8 years I realise that confidence is everything. Clients may haggle. It's part of the game. But negotiation is a dance, not a brawl. Be flexible, but know your worth. Stand firm, but with respect. Understand your minimum, ideal, and top dollar. Prepare to walk if things get ugly, or offer creative solutions if they're close.

In negotiation, it is important to be stern, yet flexible. You need to know what you bring to the table (your value) and what you want (i.e. what you should be charging). But perhaps the most important of all negotiation tactics is to be a good listener. Listen to what your potential client is saying. Ask about their concerns and address them directly, preferably with existing data. It is difficult to NOT be confident if you've got the statistics to back up what you are saying.

I made this mistake in the early days of starting my business. I went way beyond my regular rates because the market was bad and I wanted clients. While that wasn't particularly a bad movie, I realised that the kind of clients I got at that apparently 'inexpensive' rate were almost all micro-managers and not very smooth to work with. Now, before taking any new client, I go back to my last client, and evaluate my work, time spent, and the results I get for them. I am happy to say that all my clients now are high-quality, achievers, extremely learned people who value my copywriting expertise, trust me, and are all mentors to me in some way.
