1 Assess the context

Before you start designing, you need to understand the context of your project. This includes the physical, cultural, social, and historical aspects of the site and the surrounding area. To add on, you should also be appreciative of the duration in which this project will be in operation. There are some projects which are for temporary or very short term use. This will influence the design in terms of selection of material and design complexity.

2 Optimize the performance

One of the main ways to reduce the environmental impact of your design is to optimize its performance. This means that your design should use the minimum amount of energy, water, materials, and land, while providing the maximum amount of comfort, functionality, and quality. Also be mindful that your contributions as a designer to this aspect is only one side of the coin. There should be buy-in from the stakeholders or end users. They must be able to appreciate the measures that are put in place for a sustainable design. Then they will also do their part to maintain and operate the building when they take over.

Always keep reuse or rework in the back of your mind. All projects have defined objectives and anticipated outcomes, but there is no telling how a project may need to be adapted following on from its briefed lifecycle. If we appreciate that Architectural projects have a life across both their anticipated brief timeline we can then start to anticipate how small changes made during the design phase can improve the potential outcomes beyond its anticipated lifetime.

Embracing culture is one of the most effective ways to address the social and environmental impact of design, and this is reflected in embracing the culture of the place, people, and environment while focusing on the requirements of the main client according to his priorities and everything related to the stakeholders. The designer must accompany during the design process the identity, values, traditions, current and future risks and opportunities related to the identity, traditions, customs, and environmental in order to make the design more sustainable and have a positive impact on society and the environment in the long and short term.

5 Evaluate the outcomes

Finally, after you finish designing, you need to evaluate the outcomes of your design. This means that you need to measure and monitor the actual environmental and social impacts of your design, both during and after the construction and operation phases. You can do this by applying performance evaluation tools, such as life cycle assessment, energy modeling, post-occupancy evaluation, and user satisfaction surveys. You can also use impact evaluation methods, such as indicators, benchmarks, standards, and ratings.
